Duncan Surname Association

The Duncan Surname Association (DSA) was founded in the early 1990s by W. A. "Wes" Duncan (1930-2003). The purpose was to collect and make available documented information about all Duncans (including several variant spellings of  Duncan) who lived in the United States prior to 1850. To assist Wes, Mary Ann (Duncan) Dobson, the "Genealogy Bug," gave him a copy of her research files, which consisted of her own library research compiled since 1975, and also research shared with her by other Duncan descendants.

Mary Ann's research files are organized by state and individual county, which include Duncans in the census up to 1870, and by source, including marriages, obituaries, newspaper articles, family Bible records, and extracts from any land transactions, probate, court actions, war records and pensions, and county histories, in which the surname Duncan is mentioned, that she has found so far. Because Mary Ann has been researching and exchanging information with other researchers for only 29 years, some Duncan ancestors may still be missing; but ongoing research may fill in the holes.

Mary Ann's home page titled "DUNCAN Genealogy Research Files" includes almost all persons with the last name DUNCAN or similar in the 1790 to 1870 US censuses by state, and Duncans in the early wars. Of course, the "DUNCAN Genealogy Research Files" posted on the Web are not totally complete copies of Mary Ann's files. The Web version of Mary Ann's files have been edited to exclude the names and addresses of contemporary Duncan researchers, copyrighted material from county histories, and so forth. This type of supplemental information is available in the complete files available only to DSA members. (See DSA Membership below).

In addition to the research files, the DSA has established a database of over 600 names of Duncan family researchers, the name of their earliest Duncan ancestor and the Duncan ancestor they are researching. A summary of this database can be seen at this  website which is hosted by Keith Duncan.

By exploring this web site, researchers can see the names of other descendants who may share the same Duncan ancestor, email queries to C. T. Duncan and participate in the database. Membership in DSA is not required to query and participate in the researchers/ ancestors databases.

DSA Membership
Complete copies of the research files for the states and counties where their pre-1850 Duncan ancestor resided are available to members of DSA by download from this web site.
