Additional possible information: One Robert Duncan mar. Elizabeth Daish on 2 Oct. 1836 in Greenville Co. SC, and had a child, per obit, per United Ancestries Linked Pedigrees. This source stated this Robert was born 1762 in NC and died 1845 in Greenville Co. SC, which were the dates of Robert Duncan whose wife in 1821 was Hannah Carr. I believe these were two different Robert Duncans, and perhaps (no proof) the Robert Duncan who married Elizabeth Daish in 1836 was the one on the Talbot Co. GA 1850 census, Robert Duncan b. 1776 SC, wife Elizabeth b.1784 Ireland.
Additional information: Robert Duncan in Wilkinson Co. GA 1820 pg.224; possibly from York Co. SC 1810?; See James E. Duncan b.1801 SC in Houston Co. GA pg.256; Eliza Russell b.1823 GA with David Russell next door to Robert Duncan in Talbot Co. GA 1850 pg.250. Also see Sarah Duncan b.1815 NC and children James b.1844, Caroline b.1846, and Robert b.1848 GA living with Robert Duncan in Talbot Co. GA 1850 pg.250; this is probably the family of Robert's son William Duncan. John S. Duncan's family lived next door to Sarah Duncan in Chattahoochee Co. GA in 1860, and this may be the family of Robert Ray Duncan b. Marion Co. GA 1848, bur. Brazos Co. TX.

The family Bible record of Reverend Asa Duncan and his wife Flora A. Johnson of Elbert Co. GA was contributed by a Grandson, Dr. Asa Kyrus Christian, Professor of History in the University of OK. His mother and father were Reverend George Jesse Christian, b. 3-25-1854, Elbert Co. GA, d. 5-21-1924 Tyler, TX, and Sallie Safronia Duncan, b. 11-2-1857 Gosham District, Elbert Co. GA, m. 11-6-1879, recorded Elbert Co. GA, d. 11-20-1935 Houston, TX. This record was in the handwriting of Reverend Asa Duncan and had been attached in the back of Doddridge's Family Expositer, which was published in 1846. Reverend Jesse Christian, a Baptist preacher, had used this book for a family record. It is now in the possession of his eldest son, Curtis Austin Christian, Tyler, TX.

Speculation by Mary Ann Dobson:
JOHN DUNCAN SR. If his daughter who married Thomas Bryant (according to information of Mike R. Jones Jr., Loganville, GA, in the June 10, 1983 issue of "Family Puzzles") is the same Ann Duncan who married Thomas Bryan in 1778 in Wilkes Co. NC, then John Duncan Sr. may be a brother of:
Joshua Duncan, b. ca 1750 NC?, on the 1774 tax list of Benjamin Cleavland in Surry Co. NC, and in Wilkes Co. NC in 1790 census (pg.122), and in 1800 (pg.36). Family not identified.
Benjamin Duncan, b. ca 1752, fought in the Rev. War, d. Jan. 1803, married Dec. 1776 to Mary Davis in Wilkes Co. NC who died at the home of her son Moses in 1843 in Anderson Co. TN, buried at the Frost Bottom Cemetery.
Henry Duncan, b. ca 1753, wife Joanna, had land in Wilkes Co. NC 1778-1784, and was in Elbert Co. GA in 1785; he also had land in adjoining Franklin Co. GA; in 1821 as a Revolutionary Soldier he drew land in Baldwin or Wilkinson Co. GA. Any children are not identified.
Patrick Duncan, b. ca 1755, on the 1775 tax list of Benjamin Cleavland in Surry Co. NC, was in Wilkes Co. NC 1779, probably the same Patrick Duncan who appears briefly in Washington Co. TN from 1781 to 1791, and perhaps on the tax list in White Co. TN in 1818. Family not identified.
Lawrence Duncan, b. ca 1756, in Wilkes Co. NC 1779 to 1790, perhaps wife Elizabeth Smith, in Washington, Carter and Jefferson Co. TN 1792 to 1800, perhaps in Knox Co. KY 1810. Family not identified.

JOHN DUNCAN SR.'s children may include:
Ann Duncan, married Thomas Bryant, as mentioned above.
Pearson Duncan Sr., b.ca 1762, of Wilkes Co. GA 1784-1785, and of Elbert Co. GA 1794-1830; probably wife Mary b.1770 NC in Elbert Co. GA census 1840 and 1850.
      Sarah Duncan, b. ca 1765, mar. 1st Mr. Kellis, mar. 2nd after 1786 to Leonard Rice b. 1758, d. 1842.
daughter possibly the wife of Jesse Statham.
Alice Duncan, b. ca 1770, mar. Joseph Deadwyler from Wilkes Co. NC to Elbert Co. GA.
Moses Duncan, b. ca 1778, d. 1842, wife Elizabeth Bowers (Mike R. Jones information).
William DUNCAN, b. 1779 NC, d. Oct. 1850, will filed in Pontotoc Co. MS in Nov. 1850, wife Sarah Horton, b. 8 June 1788 GA, d. 28 April 1855, bur. Pontotoc Co. MS; in Elbert Co. GA through 1815, then Tuscaloosa Co. AL 1826-1839 when he sold his land in Elbert Co. GA, then Pontotoc Co. MS 1840 and later.
Aaron Duncan, b. 1780 GA, possibly unmarried, 1840 and 1850 Elbert Co. GA census.
Letty Duncan, b. before 1800, d. 9 Aug. 1855, wife of Thomas J. Haynes who died in 1841 in Elbert Co. GA.
? John Duncan, b. 27 Feb. 1804 GA, d. 22 Oct. 1890, wives Nancy Brown, and Mary (perhaps Mrs. Stephenson), father of Rev. Asa B. Duncan; John and Nancy are buried in Banks Co. GA, his will was probated in Franklin Co. GA.

The Duncan families in Elbert Co. GA are being researched by Mr. Jerry Brooks, Norcross, GA in 1995; and Mr. Paul R. Mewborn, Belleville, IL, in 1992, and several others.

Pierson Duncan had a grant of 105-1/2a of land in Elbert Co. GA in 1796 (GA Land Grant Book W4, pg.143) adjoining Henry Duncan, on Beaverdam Creek. In 1795-96, Pearson Duncan, Henry Duncan, John Duncan and others were members of the Holly Springs Baptist Church in Elbert (later Hart) Co. GA ("They Were Here"). "Campbell Co. (GA) Messenger" (Baptist Church paper) - August 4, 1916 (typed copy from Marion H. Duncan 3/11/83; MHD: "---" indicates portion missing)
            Duncan Day at Enon Church
The 15th Anniversary of the Great Family Reunion Celebrated Thursday
Peter and Margaret Duncan, husband and wife of Scotch descent, migrated to Georgia from Edgefield, South Carolina, in the early part of the last century and settled in what is now Coweta County before any county --- --- and became --- --- while the land was occupied by the Creek indians. The home of this pair of pioneer Duncans flourished. Six sons and one daughter blessed their union. The names of the sons in order of their ages are: Matthew, John, Elias, Peter, Stephen, Wesley, who became the ancestors of the numerous descendants who meet in his honor annually at the church he loved and honored with his membership so many years. The only sister of Wesley was called Crecy, probably a pet name for Lucretia, a classical feminine name. She may have been called after the famous Battle of Crecy. Her ancestors came down a line of fighters and some of them may have had part in the great battle where on the 26th of August, 1346, the English Edward III with 40,000 English soldiers defeated and almost destroyed the French army of 100,000 men, according to Froissart, a French authority. I think it was likely that some old Scotish warrior of the Duncan clan fought in this battle and to keep its' memory green gave the battle name to a daughter ... whatever the origin of her name --- --- and she won and married a man named Reason Mobley who became a Baptist preacher. Crecy and her husband lived and died and were buried in Coweta County where also were buried one brother and her mother. Her funeral was preached one Sunday by Rev. John M. Key.
The Duncans are a long lived people of strong and sturdy stock, Matthew lived to be 96; John 93. The others of the family died at ages varying between 80 and 90. Wesley was 84. The children of Wesley Duncan --- --- Fairby, Caroline Brock were Margaret Mayfield, Moses Allen, 78 and living, (William) Peter, Julie, Sara Smith, Emily Mayfield. John Henry died in infancy by his second wife, Nancy Thompson. Sam, Tom, J.W., Joe, Charlie, Alma who married William Thompson, a substantial farmer of this county. These children of Wesley Duncan and their descendants continue to increase in number and influence in Campbell and surrounding counties. They are peaceful, law-abiding, home loving people engaged in farming, following in the footsteps of their ancestors --- --- some of the production of real wealth and their increasing human happiness. They, like the good man whose memory we celebrate, live honorably, harm no one, and render to every man his due as he did so that he and they exemplified and justified the best traditions of the common law.
The barrels of lemonade, free as the air, a sumptuous feast of excellent edibles were drawing features of the Duncan family reunion at Enon. The good sermon on the conversion of St. Paul was delivered by Rev. Joseph Duncan. There was plenty of fine music by the young people and speeches were made by Colonel Oscar Barker, Mr. J.W. Mason and Mr. Ed Nolen. The Duncans are an anti-race, anti-suicide people and the families are generally large; for example, the late --- --- Peter Duncan was the father of 16 children, 12 of whom are living.

Pg.615, Douglas Co. Sketches: JOHN B. DUNCAN, farmer, Douglasville, Douglas Co. GA, son of William W. and Mary (Barnwell) Duncan, was born in Henry Co. GA Nov. 5, 1826. His paternal grandfather was John Duncan, who was born in South Carolina, of Scotch parentage. Mr. Duncan's father was born in Greenville Dist. SC, in July, 1800. When only ten years of age he was left an orphan, and although a mere boy, the duty and responsibility of caring for the family -- the work of matured manhood -- devolved upon him; but he met and discharged them with much self-reliance. Under the circumstances his education was necessarily very limited, and natural ability and force of character had to be relied on. In January, 1823, he was married to Miss Mary Barnwell of Jackson Co. GA, and settled in Henry county, where he lived about eleven years, and then moved to Cobb Co. GA, and settled in the woods filled with wild beasts and roamed over by Indians. Here he cleared a small farm, and built a comfortable log cabin home. Later he built a mill, and conducted both with profit. He attained to considerable prominence and was elected a justice of the inferior court, to which he was re-elected for a number of years, and died Jan. 23, 1847. His mother was born in Jackson county in 1806, and was the daughter of John and Mary Barnwell. Her father was born in Ireland of Irish parentage, settled in Orange district, NC, and was a soldier in the revolutionary army during the war. She died March 8, 1850. Mr. Duncan was reared on the farm and received his education at the old-time dirt floor log schoolhouse. When his father died in 1847 he assumed control, managed the affairs of the farm, and provided for the family, and the education of his younger brothers and sisters. In 1862 he enlisted in Co. D, 7th GA Reg. ... When the war ended he returned to his home in Cobb county ... add a valuable milling interest ... In 1891 he moved to Douglasville where he is living in the enjoyment of the competency ... Christian life have won for him. Mr. Duncan was married Feb. 15, 1849, to Miss Louisa, daughter of William and Priscilla (Bankston) Matthews, who died six months afterward. Oct. 17, 1850, he contracted a second marriage with Miss Martha E., daughter of Samuel G. and Elizabeth (Bankston) Mosley. Seven children which blessed this union are still living: William S., Napoleon B., Mrs. Mary E. Burton, John T., Priscilla, Robert Lee, and Frank. He is a master Mason and an exemplary member of the Methodist church.
JOHN T. DUNCAN, farmer, Douglasville, Douglas Co. GA, son of William and Martha E. (Mosley) Duncan, was born in Cobb (now Douglas) county in 1858. ... When twenty years old he engaged as a clerk in his brother's store at Powder Springs, Cobb Co. ... In 1883 he came to Douglasville ... and in company with his brother, Napoleon B., embarked in a general merchandising business. ... His interesting family occupy one of the most delightful homes in the city. Mr. Duncan was married in March, 1888, to Miss Lucerioh, daughter of John G. and Lucerioh (Varner) Clonts, by whom he has had four children: Thomas J., deceased; John H., deceased; Willie C. and Edith. He is a member of the I.O.O.F., a master Mason, and ... member of the Methodist church.

W. Boyd, A.J. Taylor. (FHC film 281,686; SLC 8/26/88)
Additional information: The earliest record for Samuel Duncan in GA is in the 1821 land lottery, when Samuel Duncan of Griffens Dist., Twiggs Co., drew lot #130 in Sec.12 (sold 1824, Houston Co. GA Deed A-269) and lot #17 in Sec.9 of Houston Co. In 1824, he bought land in Newton Co. GA (Deed A-441). As a resident of Newton Co. GA, he drew lots in the 1832 Gold Lot Lottery in Cherokee Co. later Lumpkin Co.
Additional information: 1850 Newton Co. GA Census, pg.456, household #438, Samuel Duncan 64 NC, Larenda (MAD: Lucinda) 34 SC, John 9, George W. 7 GA, Pattemile? E. GA Census, pg.498, #757-718, Samuel Duncan 74 NC, Lucinda 48 SC. Simeon Duncan mar. in Newton Co. GA to Elizabeth A. Simpson on 13 Feb. 1849 ("Newton Co. GA Marriages 1822-1870" by Ingmire); Elizabeth P. Duncan mar. William E. Landers on 24 Oct. 1839 in Newton Co. GA (ibid.).
Another son was probably Willis Duncan, who witnessed deeds between Samuel Duncan and Simeon Duncan in 1834 and also lived in Newton Co. GA when he drew land in the 1834 Gold Lot Lottery; Willis Duncan married Nancy Weldon on 9 Jan. 1840 ("Newton Co. GA Marriages 1822-1870" by Ingmire), she the daughter of James Welden according to Probate Record 10-356 filed in 1843 in Madison Co. AL on James Waldon's estate settlement ("AL Records, Madison Co." Vol.175, by Gandrud). One Nancy Duncan, perhaps the widow of Willis, married Berry Gay in Newton Co. GA on 30 Aug. 1849 (ibid.), and was on the 1850 census in Newton Co. GA, pg.433, #130, Berry Gay "30" GA, Nancy 26 SC, Elias 17, Levi 16, Susan 14, Jane 12, John 9, Martha 7 GA. It is possible that the two children with Samuel Duncan in 1850 Newton Co. GA are the children of Willis and Nancy Duncan.
There is no proof of Margaret Duncan's identity; she could be the Margaret Duncan b.1811 SC who married John Jarbor on 4 Dec. 1849 in Walton Co. GA, and perhaps was in Walton Co. GA in 1860, pg.896, #42, John A. Jarboe 57 KY dentist, Margaret 49 SC, Charles 8 GA, Martha Wise 20 GA domestic.
