James A. Duncan, b. ?1822 Scotland, son of David Duncan and Mary A. Gregg of Scotland; mar. (1) Marian Locke at Watertown, NY ca ?1848; possibly lived Cameron TX 1850; of Gregg and Bell Co. TX.
1893 "Memorial & Biographical History of McLennan, Falls, Bell,
Coryell Cos. TX" (976.4 M; from Lucille Mehrkam of Houston, TX, 2/13/84 on

Pg. 378: Rev. JAMES A. DUNCAN, rector
of the Parish at Temple and Belton, Bell Co. TX. Born at St. Andrews,
Fifeshire, Scotland, the eldest son of David and Mary A. (Gregg) Duncan.
His paternal grandfather, David Duncan, was a native of the same town.
The family estates are held by Mr. Duncan's cousins on the maternal side.
The family is descended from the Argles, a very ancient line. The father of James
was an architect and builder. He died in 1869 and his wife followed him in 1879.
Her father, James Gregg, was an officer in the British Navy who was retired
after many years of active service. The Gregg family are descendants of the
McGregors; a portion of the family emigrated to America and organized a Parish
in NC; many of them are now residents of Texas, and hold high positions in the
society and political world. James attended school at St. Andrews and
when education was completed he entered the English Navy and served Her
Majesty's goverment four years. At the experation of that period he resigned his
position and emigrated to the United States. Here he settled in New Orleans,
LA, in 1848. He resumed his study of theology. In 1849 he united with the
Episcopal Church at Algiers. In 1853 he went to Canada but at the end of year
returned to LA. The following year he purchased land in Grimes Co. TX and
for 22 years made this his abiding place. He opened a plantation and also gave
some attention to the raising of sheep on a large scale. The nearest Episcopal
Church being 100 miles from his plantation he, took membership in the Methodist
Church South and was ordained a Deacon at La Grange, TX, ca 1861 and three years
later he was ordained an Elder. For 22 years he preached in Madison, Grimes and
Leon Co.'s and organized several churches. He after went to Bastrop Co. for two
years; he was then stationed at Columbus and Wimer for three years. Mr. Duncan
returned to the Episcopal Church in 1888. Then for 10 months he filled the post
of Missionary at Lampasas, while Mrs. Duncan was in ill health. In 1888
he was called to St. Lukes Parish, Belton, and the Mission Church at Temple. He
made his home at Belton three years and in Dec. 1891 removed to Temple; here he
owns some valuable property; he has erected four dwellings and has an interest
in Duncan and Co. addition of 82 lots, situated on an elevated ridge in
the NE part of Temple.
Mr. Duncan has been twice married; at
Watertown, NY, he was united to Miss Marion Locke, daughter of Capt. Locke, a
member of a Scotch regiment, who lost his life in the Island of Ceylon. Mrs.
Duncan died in Dec. 1888 at Belton leaving five (sic) children: Silas A.
Duncan, Eliz. wife of J.W. Martin, James E. Duncan, Alex Perry
Duncan, Emma wife of Louis Eilers, and Louisa who died in Canada. Mr.
Duncan was married Oct. 6, 1891, to Mrs. E.T. Young.

Pg.301-2: J.T. DUNCAN. Among the
leading attorneys of La Grange [Fayette Co.], TX, is J.T. Duncan,
a man of unquestioned integrity, and competent in his profession. To a thorough
knowledge of the legal science, he joins the general culture derived from a
varied and extended course of reading, and is skillful in the presentation of
the most involved or intricate facts, and forcible in his manner of dealing with
difficult and entangled subjects. He was born in Washington Co. TX in
1854, and is the son of George J. and Elizabeth (Dallas) Duncan,
natives of Kentucky. This family was one of the earliest and most prominent ones
of Virginia. The grandmother of our subject on the paternal side was a native of
North Carolina, but the maternal grandparents were natives of Pennsylvania. The
latter came to the Lone Star State in 1833, and settled near Independence,
Washington Co. TX. In 1839 the father of our subject came to Washington County,
and engaged in farming. He was a single man then, but married Miss Dallas in
1851, afterward residing in Washington County until 1880, when he moved to Milam
County, where he died in 1893. He was in Summersville's campaign against the
Mexicans in 1840, and proceeded as far as Laredo. This expedition was for the
purpose of forever settling the boundary line between Mexico and Texas, and this
body of hardy Texans suffered many hardships on this trip. At one time Mr.
Duncan got lost from his command, and before reaching the main army suffered
greatly. To his marriage were born five children. J.T. Duncan was
educated in Baylor University, of Independence, graduating from that institution
in 1877, and immediately afterward he came to La Grange, TX, where he entered
the law office of Timmons & Brown. In June 1878, he was admitted to the
practice of law in this state, and subsequently formed a partnership with R.J.
Andrews, the same continuing until 1881, and was then elected to the office, his
term expiring in 1882. Since that time he has not aspired to public positions. Mr.
Duncan is attorney for the San Antonio and Arkansas Pass Railway Company, a
position he fills to the entire satisfaction of all the people interested. Jan.
1, 1885, Mr. Duncan formed a partnership with Judge L.W. Moore, the style
of the firm being Moore & Duncan. Judge Moore is one of the oldest and best
known attorneys in the state, being ex-member of Congress and ex-judge of this
profession, and is remarkably well adapted to the requirements of the same, and
his strength lies in his great fairness and liberality, coupled with a keen
discernment of motives behind actions.

Pg.454-5, Oak Grove Township: JONATHAN
DUNCAN (deceased) was born near Baltimore, MD, November 19, 1791, and was a
son of Andrew and Ann (Smith) Duncan. He received a liberal
education for his time, supplemented by healthy toil of the farm. He thus became
vigorous in both mind and body. He became a carpenter by trade, and was the
builder of the large hotel of fifty rooms at Mineral Springs, PA. He also became
extensively engaged in the wool business. He was at one time a large stockholder
in a number of stage lines in PA, owning a large farm where he fed his horses
for the line. It was in 1815 when he moved to Washington Co. PA. He is
familiarly known as Col. Duncan, having enlisted in the war of 1812, as
lieutenant, and later, being promoted colonel. Very many of the colonel's best
years were actively spent in PA. There he lived till the year 1854. He had made
a trip to Illinois in 1853, purchasing 260 acres in sections 26 and 27, Ohio
Grove township, Mercer Co. IL. In 1854 he moved his family via the river to
Keithsburg and thence to his farm. Here he lived till 1874. He improved his farm
and became a factor in the county's progress. He was on intimite terms with the
lamented Judge William M. Hayes, and made many friends by his good nature and
industry. In politics he was always democratic, but sought no political
emolument. In religion he was of the United Presbyterian faith. He aided in
building Sunbeam church. Mr. Duncan moved to Monmouth in 1874, to live in
retirement. On September 10, 1876, while visiting his son, Dr. J.K. Duncan,
at Des Moines, Iowa, death claimed him. He was buried at Monmouth, (Warren
Co.) Illinois.
Mr. Duncan was first married to Miss
Letha Swearengen. She died, leaving four children. He was next married June 29,
1835, to Miss Agnes Leeper, daughter of Robert and Nancy Leeper, both of whom
were born in York county, and died in Washington Co. PA. Mrs. Duncan was born in
Washington Co. PA, June 10, 1815. She now resides with her son in Mercer county.
Mr.
Duncan's first family are:
William Duncan, of Mercer county;
Thomas, of Des Moines, Iowa;
Sarah, now Mrs. William McCanless, of
Crescent, Iowa. Mr. McCanless was a prominent man of Mercer county, having owned
the land on which Aledo is built; also, laid out the town. He was lieutenant in
company A, 84th Ill. Vol., and was killed at the battle of Chattanooga.
Dr. Bazil Duncan was army surgeon one
year. He is now dead.
In the
second family are:
Robert, who served in the civil war
in company F, 17th Ill. Vol., and was promoted second lieutenant;
Dr. J.K. Duncan, who was in the naval
service; he was captain of a gun on the gunboat "Fort Hyman;" seizing
an enemy's hot shell, thrown on board and endangering the lives of his men, he
threw it into the river, suffering his hands and arms to be severely burned by
the operation. For this feat he was promoted captain of the gun-boat. He took
sick and was sent to Pensacola hospital, Florida. Being there at the time of the
yellow fever scourge, and having studied medicine, he was retained as surgeon
and physician three years, on a salary of $2,000. He is now of Nebraska.
The other children are: Isophena, James,
Andrew (dead), Nettie, Arnett, Charles, Frank and Ida.
Arnett was born in Washington
Co. PA, January 28, 1850. He was married to Carrie, daughter of J.B. Gilmore.
She was born near Oxford, Ohio. Arnett now owns 100 acres of the old
homestead; also, 160 acres besides, well improved.
