TN Civil War Questionnaire, Confederate (FHC film 975,594; SLC 9/83)
These questionnaires were sent by TN Historical Committee to all living Civil War Veterans about 1914-1915, and vary a little in format. Not all were returned by the veterans. They are about four pages long, a printed form to fill in the blanks. A name index was printed in Ansearchen News, Vol. 25, sent by Evelyn; the TN State Library & Archives has either the originals or a copy.
This questionnaire contains 46 questions, many about his parents' home and work, many about his own home and work as a boy, some about servants and the feeling in his area about slaves and slave-holders, his schools, and his service in the War, such as experiences in battles, and the names & addresses of other men in his company.
TN Historical Committee Questionnaire, Recd. 14 Sept. 1922, filled in by W.A. Duncan, of Martin, TN, age 75, born Wilson Co. TN. Confederate Soldier in Company G.
      7. Father: a farmer, William Spencer Duncan, born at Carthage, Smith Co., TN; lived in Wilson Co. when he died but he did not live but a few years after he married.
      8. Mother: Eliza Chambers, she did not live long, she was the daughter of Lewis Chambers and his wife Ann Chambers, who lived in Wilson Co.
      9. Remarks on Ancestry: My Father and Mother died when I was a small child don't remember nothing about them more than I have given. My grandfather Chambers father came Ireland to North Calina (sic) and moved Tennesse Wilson County and settled and lived at the same place as long as he lived. This is all I know on that line, he was a little boy during the revolutionary war. What little I know I heard him tell.
Value of property owned by your parents: My parents both died many years before the one war and my Grandfather Chambers taken me and took care of me and I went to the War. (answer to earlier question: I was about 14 years old when the war begun.)
Other comments later on questionnaire: I did not have time enough to finish telling you in No. 9. My Grandfather Duncan father came from Scotland so was Scottz & Irish. I spent (Depend?) they settled in Virginia and my Grandfather came to Tenness he was in the war of 1812 he was a farmer. His full name was William Spencer Duncan his wife name was Nancy Short (Shott?) which was her maiden name and married my grandfather.

Letter of Sept. 28, 1921, from Dept. of Interior, Bureau of Pensions, to Mrs. Alice V.D. Pierrepont, Violet Bank, Petersburg, VA. Madam: In reply to your letter dated 30 August and received 3rd Sept., you are advised that the Revolutionary War records of this Bureau fail to afford any information in regard to Webb Kidd. In order to identify the record of any particular George Duncan, you are requested to furnish as much of the following data as possible: places of residence at enlistment and after service; approximate dates of birth and death; given names of widow; names of any Officers under whom he served.
Handwritten at bottom of letter: Webb Kidd mar. Elizabeth White, daughter of Jeremiah White. Over.
Handwritten on back of letter: Oct. 1, 1921 , Violet Bank Studio, Petersburg , VA. I wish I could give you the information desired as to George Duncan. This is all I know. My grandfather Marcus Monroe Duncan was the son of George Duncan. He was born in Buckingham Co. VA. He & his brother George & sister Eliza were left orphans at an early age, Mr. Janius Clay being guardian. The Buckingham records were destroyed & our family Bible burned. I think my gr.gr.grandfather was also George Duncan of Albemarle or Fluvanna Co. -- his wife Ann & his lands on both sides of the river -- Hardware, I think. The family tradition is that he was a Rev. soldier. So he would probably be listed from one of those 3 counties as a soldier. Thanking you for any trouble, Sincerely yours, Alice V.D. Pierrepont. (MAD: there is no proof that Marcus Monroe Duncan is a descendant of George Duncan from Albemarle Co. VA to Orange Co. IN or of George Duncan, wife Ann Hall, d. Fluvanna Co. VA 1783)

Abijah (Bige) Duncan, bro. of R.H. Duncan, in unmarked grave
(Copy of page 9) Mrs. Nelda Weatherby sent me the following information: "There is a grave in the Barnett Cemetery that I think you would like to know about -- it is that of a notorious outlaw, R.H. (Dick) Duncan. He was hanged in Eagle Pass for having murdered 4 people. The stone has fallen from its base and is located a short distance southeast of the Barnett graves. I had been told about this grave and was especially looking for it when I went to the Barnett Cemetery . The inscription is quite interesting:
R.H. Duncan born in Leon Co. , Texas December 6, 1862 / Murdered at Eagle Pass Sept. 18, 1891 / His last words / I know that God has forgiven me, and I feel / that I have heard from him. Good-by, I hope / we all meet in heaven, I feel that I am going / right there, and feel that I will be pardoned / for my sins and washed whiter than snow.

His wife Martha was Martha Muskogee Blanchard Mullins Duncan. She was born Sept. 5, 1824, near Macon GA, died in San Saba Co. TX, Jan. 8, 1927. I have her death certificate. Her father is shown as Bus Blanchard. She married (1) John Ausbury Mullins and (2) Abijah. Mr. Mullins died in Arkansas; family says that she married him in GA and he became ill, probably TB, and they traveled west along with Martha's parents to Arkansas where he died, and she then married Abijah Duncan. He died 1903 in San Saba Co. TX; I also have this death certificate but it shows no mother or father's names on it.

John W. Duncan, son of William Duncan b.1808 Todd Co. KY & Mary Hollingsworth, b. Todd Co. KY in 1831, mar. Alma C. Vann, lived Faulkner Co. AR 1870.

1881 "Encyclopedia of the New West" by Speer & Brown (FHC film 1,000,598 item 2; SLC 2/26/92; includes TX, AR, NM, CO, Indian Territory)
Pg.65-6, Arkansas: Hon. John W. Duncan, Conway [Faulkner Co.]. John W. Duncan was born Nov. 27, 1831, at Elkton, Todd Co. KY. His grandfather, William Duncan, of Scotch descent, was a farmer in fine circumstances and moved from VA to KY, settling in Todd Co., ... died in Todd Co. about the year 1820. His father, William Duncan, born in Todd Co. in 1808, an industrious farmer ..., died at the age of 70. His mother, Mary Hollingsworth, was a native of Maury Co. TN, born in 1813, the daughter of John H. Hollingsworth, a wealthy farmer. She was educated and married at Elkton, KY, and is now living at Springfield [Conway Co.], AR. William and Mary Duncan had ten children: John W., Jeptha H., Elizabeth, Samuel K., James T., Winfield S., Emily E. (wife of J.M. Allinder), Jasper, Mary (wife of R.S. Moses), Leander V., and Nancy (wife of C.F. Moses). Jeptha H., Elizabeth and Winfield S. are dead. The maternal grandmother of John W. Duncan was a Thompson. Obituary in "Arkansas Methodist" Thursday, Feb. 2, 1893 (copy from Dale O. Duncan 5/8/91)
DUNCAN. Judge J.W. Duncan, one of the truest and most faithful members of our Church in Conway [Faulkner Co.], AR, was called to the fellowship of the Church triumphant Nov. 12, 1892. He was born near Elkton, Todd Co. KY, Nov. 27, 1831; located at Springfield, AR, 1859. In 1860 he was happily married to Miss Alma C. Vaun of Evansville, IN, who now with their two surviving children, William and Miss Annie, mourns the loss of a devoted husband and loving father.
Judge Duncan was one of Faulkner Co.'s very best citizens. ... Once he represented Conway Co. in the Legislature, one or two terms he served as County and Probate Judge of Faulkner county and two terms he served his district in the State Senate. ... admitted to the bar in early manhood ... official in the Methodist Church at Conway at time of his death ... several times a delegate to the Annual Conference ...

"Faulkner Co. (AR), Its Land and People" by Faulkner Co. AR Hist. Soc., 1986 (FHC book 976.774 H2d for title, SLC 9/4/91; copy of pages from Dale O. Duncan 5/8/91)
The William Duncan Family; source: Marge Garrison Brown & Freed H. Duncan (pg.352-3): This family played an important role in the development of Faulkner Co. in two ways. It furnished two of the early judges of the county, and equally important is the descent still living and providing leadership in the county today. The progenitor of the Duncans of Faulkner Co. came to the new world prior to 1700; his descendants came to AR by way of VA, TN and KY.
The parents of the AR family were William and Mary (Hollingsworth) Duncan. William was the son of a William Duncan and his second wife Asenith (Hollingsworth). Mary was the daughter of John Gordon Hollingsworth and his wife Sarah Ann Thompson, thus William and Mary were first cousins. They were married in Todd Co. KY on Feb. 12, 1831. Their Hollingsworth ancestry in this county dates from 1684 to the Quakers that came with William Penn.
The oldest son, John W. Duncan, came to AR around 1855. He was a young lawyer and came to the Springfield, AR area. It was after the Civil War in 1869, that William and Mary and their large family followed John and settled in the Conway Co. / Faulkner Co. area. (MAD: much more given on later descendants; see this history for more)

Information from Mrs. Margie G. Brown, 3005 Phyllmar Place, Oakton, VA 22124, to Nancy Bobal to send to MAD (from Nancy 3/12/93).
William Duncan (d. 1817 KY) (MAD: see Logan Co. KY Will Book B, pg.77) married Asenith Bingamon June 1814. William (born 1808 KY, d. 1878 AR) and Samuel (b. 1813, d. 1834) cannot be children of this 3rd wife. John Gordon Hollingsworth was the older William's former brother in law, hence was named their guardian. (MAD: agree, they must be ch. of 2nd wife)
Other than the family tradition that William (b. 1808) and Mary were first cousins and grew up in the same household, I cite the 1926 Hollingsworth genealogy and the papers of Lyde Allinder Robins written in 1924. She was a grandchild of this couple. The tombstones are extant for the above mentioned William (b. 1808, d. 1878) Springfield Cemetery Faulkner Co. AR and Samuel (b. 1813, d. 1834) Crouch Farm Allensville Todd Co. KY. Whether you accept that as adequate proof or not, they are not children of Asenith Bingamon.
One other important piece of documentation that I cannot lay my hands on, in the oldest extant book in Todd Co. Chancery Court records unnumbered book (across the hall from Circuit Court) Martin Duncan dies before the settlement of William's (d. 1817) estate and two of Martin's children are acting in his stead, to settle the property of all of what was to be Elkton, KY. One was named Samuel, and feel he is the one Reba Roy asks about on pp 139 of her book, the other name is not as firmly planted in my mind, but I'm sure an avid researcher looking in the Chancery Courts of all three counties of Christian, Todd, and Logan KY and Montgomery and Robertson Counties TN could find some of Martin's children. The date of Martin's death is far earlier than 1827 computed by Mrs. Roy. It is closer to the founding date of Todd Co. as this is almost the first Chancery suit in that county. William (d. 1817) was a huge landowner in that area.
The 1860 census #876 the wife is Sarah Elizabeth a daughter of William (b. 1808) and Mary. The letters of Capt John William (wife Alma Vann) states she died during Civil War, Jacob was a cousin. (MAD: 1860 Todd Co. KY p.794, Jacob Duncan 30 TN, S.E. (f) 21 KY & ch.)
John William, Jeptha, J.Thomas and Samuel King (Duncan) all have Confederate pension records either for themselves or their widows. John W. and J.Thomas were prisoners at Johnson Island, Ohio. Jeptha and Samuel King were wounded.
The mass of Duncan removal to AR for this family occurred after the Civil War. Only J. Thomas and Elizabeth Jourdan Duncan remained for the 1880 Todd Co. census. They are living at Old Hadensville in a family neighborhood. Martha wife of Burnley Duke Smith was a Jourdan sister of Bettie's father Coleman Jourdan, and Eliza Powell was nee Jourdan another sister. They were children of Robert Jourdan b. 1782 Halifax Co. VA, d. 1849 testate Todd Co. KY his tombstone is in the Byars/Terry Cem. (Rt #79 Todd Co. KY) and wife Tabitha Medley who died in Halifax Co. prior to 1830.
Tom (MAD: J. Thomas) and Bettie were in Arkansas before 1882 when their youngest son Robert was born. After the death of Tom in 1887 the family returned to Todd Co. and stayed until the death of her mother Lucy (Terry) Jordan in 1893. Her father Coleman Jordan died 1890. A son John Hamet died in KY at the age of 16. Minnie married George Talley and did not return to AR with the rest of Bettie's family. Bettie died 1907 Lonoke Co. AR. She received a widow's pension from AR.
Her oldest son Granville (b. 1872) m. Ida (Hamilton) Armstrong a divorcee. He was a twin to Minnie (Duncan) Talley, went to California and has descendants in the Lodi area.
      M. Herbert, b. Dec 7, 1879, d. Aug 9, 1961, m. Feb 15, 1906? Lula Pearl Leker b. Dec 31, 1889, d. Sep 4, 1977, are buried at the Antitoch Church, Monroe, LA.
William T., b. May 3, 1875, d. Feb 29, 1960, m. Dec 1905 Odelia DesRuisseaux in Lonoke Co. AR; she b. May 18, 1890 and d. Dec 20,1976. They are both buried at Augusta, AR.
Robert, b. ca 1882, m. ca 1905 Lena Olive Lee; I cannot put my hands to their vital records but Aunt Olive died within the last few years at well over 90. Uncle Bob died more than 25 years ago.
All of these Duncan descendants left issue.
My grandparents William and Delia, had only one dau, my mother Mary Ruth (Duncan) Garrison, and eight sons, six lived to adulthood.
John Duncan the oldest son of William (d. 1817) married in Christian Co. KY 1819 Nancy Bingamon. The other piece of documentation that I'm unable to find is that Ceily married Thomas Price soon after the death of her father, making it likely that she was the youngest dau of the first marriage to Mary Spiller. Family papers says the Spillers were a Quaker family from PA. Document seekers should not overlook Maury, Robertson, and Montgomery Cos. TN.
