Brief Duncan Data
From Files of Mary Ann Dobson

************

Two Quaker Duncan families of Fairfax Co. VA 1748 to Newberry and Edgefield Co. SC; Samuel Duncan d.1770 Craven Co. SC, wife Sarah; and Richard Duncan, b.1722, d. by 1803, son of Patrick Duncan of Baltimore and Anne Arundel Co. MD

SAMUEL DUNCAN, d. 1770, wife Sarah ----; probably a brother of Richard Duncan; his parents may have been Patrick Duncan and wife Mary of Baltimore and Anne Arundel Co. MD 1709-1729. NOTE: The name is frequently spelled Dunkin in the records, as well as Duncan.
He bought 100a on Goose Creek in Fairfax Co. VA in 1748 (Deed B-392) from Samuel Harris Jr. & wife Mary which he and wife Sarah sold in Loudoun Co. VA in 1766 to Stephen Russell (Deed E-223). He and Richard Duncan witnessed deeds for and with the Harris, Cox and Gregg family from 1748 to 1753 (Deeds B-353, B-355, B-389, B-394, C-98, C-655). He was a voter in 1755, surveyor of a road in 1757, and in 1758 after Loudoun Co. VA was formed from Fairfax, he was a chain carrier with Isaac Walker for a survey for Joshua Dunkin on a warrant of Joshua's of 1751. He was on the 1758 tax list in Loudoun Co. VA. He was also on the 1765 rental rolls with 2 tithables, and he or another Samuel was on the rental rolls in 1769, 1771 and 1772.

In 1765, Samuel had 400a surveyed for him on Bush River adj. Mathias Elmore and William Hilbourn, in old Craven Co. SC, granted in 1769 (Land plat 11-41, Royal Land Grant 16&18-541, Memorial 8-535).
In 1767, Samuel had 350a surveyed for him in the fork between Broad and Saluda Rivers on a small branch of Bush Creek adj. David Hammer or Taverner and Wm. Austen, in old Berkeley Co. SC. The plat was certified for Sarah Duncan on 4 Sept. 1770, and later in 1770 was granted to her and memorialized by her (Land plat 11-415, Royal Land grant 21-72, Memorial 10-254). Samuel's land also adj. Richard Dunkin's 200a in 1771; Richard's other neighbors were Hannah Coote (or Cook) and David Moat (or Meat) (Land Plat 14-497).
According to the file of Leonardo Andrea on Counties in SC, old Craven Co. SC included among others, the eastern portions of present Greenville, Laurens and Newberry Co., which had first been laid off as part of old Berkeley Co. Old Berkeley County in its upper reaches had an indefinite line, and comprised among other counties the western 2/3 of the present Laurens Co., and the western half of Newberry and Greenville, and most of Orangeburg Co. The old colonial counties were discontinued after the Revolution.
According to the 1859 "Annals of Newberry in Two Parts", part 1 by O'Neall, p.28-29, Quaker Settlement on Bush River and Beaverdam. Residents of same tract of country before or during the revolution and were Friends or were ranked as such by descent ... Sarah Duncan, Samuel Duncan, and John Duncan.
Samuel died in 1770, when Sarah Duncan applied on Nov. 5 to administer his estate on Bush River, Craven Co., as his nearest of kin (Charleston Co. SC Court of Ordinary 1764-71; Inv. Book Z-137, filed in 1771 in Charleston Co. SC; most probate documents in the Colonial and Rev. periods were filed at Charleston for the entire state.)

In 1779, Amos Duncan and wife Elizabeth sold 250a on Bush Creek, part of Samuel Duncan's 400a grant, to Abner Ellmore (Newberry Co. SC Deed C-709). There is no record of a deed on file to Amos Duncan for this land, so it is probable he inherited it as oldest son.
Royal colonies, incl. SC, initially adopted the English law of intestate estates as well as the customs of primogeniture and dower (1712). The law of intestate estates dealt with personalty, property other than land; it gave the widow 1/3 (1/2 if no children) and the children equal shares of the other 2/3 of the personalty; primogeniture gave the eldest son exclusive succession to the land; dower gave the widow lifetime use of 1/3 of the land ("Family Relations and Inheritance in Early SC" by John E. Crowley, p.37, in "Histoire sociale - Social History" Vol.XVII, No.33, 5/1984); primogeniture and entail were abolished in the two decades after the American Rev. In SC, in the 1791 revision, sons and daus. shared equally in real & personal property and widows received outright ownership of 1/3 of the estate's real property rather than just lifetime use of it; widow could still claim dower in lieu of any legacy by will; husbands no longer had life interest in their widow's land (ibid, p.39). An amendment in 1797 allowed parents half the estate and siblings the other half (apparently of unmarried decedents; p.39).
In 1779, Sarah Duncan of Edgefield Co. SC sold 150a on Bush Creek of Broad River in Newberry Co. to her son Samuel Duncan, witnessed by Enos Elmore, John Duncan and James Hall (Newb. deed C-306); in 1800, Samuel Dunkin and his wife Mary sold this land to John Elleman, being the middle part of the 350a grant to Sarah Dunkin in 1770 (Newb. deed I-146). In 1816, Jesse Elleman deeded 115a of the land to Nancy Elleman (Newb. deed P2-300).
Also in 1779, Sarah Duncan sold 100a in Newberry Co. SC, part of her 350a grant in 1770, to James Cummack, witnessed by Samuel Duncan, James Hall and George Pemberton (Newb. deed G-23, recorded 1804 by George Pemberton). The Cummack family has not been traced to find out if there was a kinship to the Duncans.
In 1803, Amos Dunkin and wife Elizabeth sold 112a to Isaac Hollingsworth, part of a 200a grant to Richard Dunkan whose son John deeded it to Amos the same day (Newb. Deed F-259), and part of "250" acre grant to Amos' mother Sarah Dunkin in 1770, which Amos had inherited when Sarah died, the deed was witnessed by John Dunkin and others (Newb. deed G-281). In 1820, part of this land and adj. parcels were resurveyed for Samuel Cothran (Newb. Deed P2-47) who sold it to Robert R. Nance (Newb. Deed P2-48); the neighbors included Amos Duncan and Margaret Duncan.
The children of Samuel Duncan and wife Sarah:

      1.      ? Sarah DUNCAN, possibly born ca 1746, wife of James Hall; their son Amos Hall was born in 1766 in SC, married 1795-6 Sarah Coate, and died in 1850 in Miami Co. OH, according to "Gen. Index of Pioneers in the Miami Valley, OH" (Miami, Montgomery, Preble and Warren Cos.) by Lindsay M. Brien. The "Coates Genealogy" mss. says Sarah Duncan, b. 1743 (sister of Samuel Duncan), married James Hall; two children, Mary Elizabeth Hall b. 1756 mar. in 1789 to Robert Dixon b.1754, and Amos Hall b. 1766 mar. Sarah Coates b.1774, 9th child of Marmaduke Coates & wife Mary Coppock. We do not have any original sources that name James Hall's wife as a Sarah Duncan.

      2.      Amos DUNCAN, oldest son since he sold Samuel's land in 1777 (Newb. deed C-709), possibly b.ca 1749, mar. before 1777. Died 1805 in Newberry Co. SC, leaving a widow Elizabeth. Elizabeth was said to be the daughter (4th child) of Isaac or Isaiah Duncan and wife Elizabeth Pemberton; this is apparently in error and should refer to Isaac or Isaiah Pemberton instead of Duncan. No record has been found of an Isaac or Isaiah Duncan in VA or SC old enough to be the father of Amos's wife Elizabeth, b. bef. 1760 (signed deed 1777). However, a Newberry Co. SC Will C-34, of Isaiah Pemberton, dated 1801 and proved in 1802, named wife Hester; sons Isiah, George and Robert; daus. Mary and Elizabeth; exec. Robert Pemberton and bro-in-law Samuel Coat; wit. Samuel Miles, William Chapman and Wm. Galbreath. Other children of Isaiah Pemberton have not been followed to determine possible ages.
Amos Duncan is said to have been in the Rev. War but no documentary proof has yet been found. His daughter Sarah who married first Samuel Taylor and second Henry Fletcher had a son John Fletcher; the 1889 "Port. & Biog. Album of Vermilion Co. IL" said John Fletcher's grandfather on his mother's side, Samuel Duncan, was a soldier in the Rev. War and participated in the Battle of Cowpens, and was known as a 'fighting Quaker.' Sarah is proved to be a daughter of Amos Duncan by his estate record; Sarah's grandfather Samuel (Sr. wife Sarah) was dead by 1770; Sarah's brother Samuel (Jr., wife Rebecca) could have been in the Rev. There is no proof whether the biography mistakenly referred to Sarah's uncle Samuel Duncan or Sarah's father Amos Duncan.
In 1779, Amos Duncan and wife Elizabeth sold 250a on Bush Creek, part of Samuel Duncan's 400a grant, to Abner Ellmore (Newb. Deed C-709). There is no record of a deed on file to Amos Duncan for this land, so it is probable he inherited it as oldest son.
In 1789, Amos Duncan had a land grant (26-187) for 462a in Orangeburg Co. on Cedar Creek of the Edisto River, adj. Thomas Pemberton and others (Land plat 24-155 indexed). He was on the census in Orangeburg Co. SC in 1790 (p.100, South part) (1 male over 21, 5 males under 21, 2 females). Most early Orangeburg Co. SC records have been lost, and there are no further records of him there.
In 1789 he witnessed the will (Newb. A-78) of Richard Bartwisle; in 1795 he bought items from the estate of John Riley (Newb. will A-327); in 1796 and 1797 he was a juror in Newb. Co.; in Newberry Co. in 1798 he bought items from the estates of Isaac Jenkins (Prob. Box 10 Pkg.12) and Walter Herbert Sr. (Prob. Box 356, pkg.48). In 1800 he witnessed the will of John Elleman (D-57) and in 1801 was admin. of the estate of William Cooper (Prob. Box 2, pkg.32). He was on the 1800 census in Newberry Co. SC (p.73)
In 1803, Amos Dunkin and wife Elizabeth (released dower in 1805) sold 112a to Isaac Hollingsworth, part of a 200a grant to Richard Dunkan whose son John (John Jr., wife Rachel, of Edgefield) deeded it to Amos the same day (Newb. Deed F-259, also 80a grant to John Dunkin 1787), and part of "250" acre grant to Amos' mother Sarah Dunkin in 1770, which Amos had inherited when Sarah died, the deed was witnessed by John Dunkin and others (Newb. deed G-281). In 1820, part of this land and adj. parcels were resurveyed for Samuel Cothran (Newb. Deed P2-47) who sold it to Robert R. Nance (Newb. Deed P2-48); the neighbors included Amos Duncan and Margaret Duncan.
Amos Duncan died in 1805 in Newberry Co. SC; his will (Will E-118, Probate Box 6 Pkg.9) named his wife Elizabeth and his ten children Sarah M. Taylor, Isaiah, Amos, William, George, John, Elizabeth, Eli, Joshua, and Hannah L. Dunkin (youngest); it also mentioned his lands on the Edisto River (which were granted in Orangeburg Co. SC) and mentioned that his wife and children were considering moving to the Western Country (Ohio); the executors were his wife Elizabeth and his son Isaiah; wit. John Ellemore, Samuel Taylor (proved will), Joseph Furnas. "Newberry Co. SC Historical and Genealogical Society" by Summer also has a summary of Amos Duncan's children.
From 1814 to 1829, his heirs sold their interest in his land. Deed N-123 and P-419, 1814, Charles Inman & wife Elizabeth of Greene Co. IN to Isaiah Duncan, Elizabeth a dau. of Amos Duncan Sr., her interest in 360a on Beverdam Creek of Bush River; N-121, 1819, Elizabeth Duncan, widow of Amos Duncan decd, to Isaiah Duncan, her dower in land of Amos Duncan on Bush Creek; N-122, 1819, Eli Duncan to Isaiah Duncan, my right to 300a grant to said Duncan and Sarah Ann Duncan, on a branch of Bush River, being part of estate of Amos Duncan my father; N-131, 1819, George Duncan (X) to Isaiah Duncan, interest in land of my father Amos Duncan Sr. on branch of Bush River; P-421, 1829, Joshua Duncan of Greene Co. IN, to Isaiah Duncan, one of sons of Amos Duncan, my interest in 360a on Bush River; P-422, 1829, Obediah Winter & wife Hanna of Greene Co. IN, to Isaiah Duncan, interest of Hannah one of daus. of Amos Duncan decd, in 360a on Bush River. There is probably a deed for Sarah Ann Taylor Fletcher which was overlooked.
      *      One Elizabeth DUNCAN, Quaker, married 12/2/1819 in Orange Co. IN to Reuben Crow of Jackson Co. IL.
In 1808, Elizabeth Duncan was received at the Miami MM, Warren Co. OH, from Bush River MM, Newberry Co. SC on an 1807 cert.; she was endorsed to Center MM, Clinton Co. OH. In March 1813 at the Caesaers Creek MM, Clinton Co. OH, she was granted a cert. to the New Garden MM, Guilford Co. NC where she was received in Nov. (Hinshaw & IN Quaker Rec.)
In July 1819, Elizabeth Duncan was received at the Lick Creek MM, Orange Co. IN, on a cert. from the Bush River MM, Newberry Co. SC. On 10/30/1819 at the Lick Creek meeting, she declared her intention to mar. Reuben Crow; on 12/2/1819 Elizabeth Duncan of Lawrence Co. IN mar. Reuben Crow of Jackson Co. IL at the White River MH.
Children of Amos Duncan and Elizabeth Pemberton, in the order named in his will:

2.1.       Isaiah DUNCAN, b. 15 Oct. 1785 (b. VA per 1850 census), wife Hannah Barrett, dau. of Henry Onslow Barrett and Rachel Crumley ("Quaker Fams. of SC & GA"); had 16 children per 1909 "History of Clay Co. IN, 6 by Hannah Barrett; wife Nancy b. 1804 SC on the 1850 census; last 8 children were born in IN.
      *      One Isaac DUNCAN in 1806 witnessed with Daniel Steward and John Edmondson the deed (Newb. J-119) of John Dunkin to Isaac Eamondson of 100a adj. Amos Dunkin. Isaac Duncan in 1810 purchased items from the estate of John Elleman decd (Newb. Prob. Box 6, pkg.17, 1807); one of the appraisers was Isaiah Duncan (son of Amos Sr.) and one of the witnesses in 1802 was Amos Duncan (probably Amos Sr.). This Isaac may be the same as Isaiah or he may be a separate person.
Isaiah Duncan was appraiser of estate of John Elleman in 1807 (Newberry Probate Box 6, pkg.17); on the 1810 Newberry Co. SC census (p.122a) when his mother was in his household; bondsman in 1817 and estate purchaser in 1820 for the estate of Henry O. Barrett (Newb. Probate Box 23, Pkg.4). He purchased the rights of most of his brothers and sisters and of his mother to his father Amos' land in 1819-1829. There is a possibility this land was sold by the sheriff to Henry & John B. O'Neale by 1814 as the property of Isaiah Duncan, referred to in Deed P-419. He was on the 1820 census in Newberry Co. SC (p.142).
In 1822, Isaiah purchased 40-1/2a on Beaverdam Creek branch of Saluda River (Newb. deed O-20) and sold it in 1823 (O-351). He purchased items in 1827 from the estate of Abner Atkins (Probate Box 22, Pkg.14).
In 1830, Isaiah Duncan was on the census in White Co. IL (p.20).
In 1840, Isaiah Duncan was in Clay Co. IN (p.351), and also in 1850. He had come to Clay Co. IN in 1831, about the same time as his brothers John, Joshua and Eli who later moved elsewhere. (1909 "Hist. Clay Co. IN") He was joined in IN by his nephews George W. (d.1860 Clay Co. IN) and Giles W. (d.1879 IA) who were sons of his brother George who stayed in SC. (See Newsletter Vol.2 #2, 1994)

2.2.      Sarah Ann DUNCAN, b. ca 1788; "Newberry Co. SC Hist. & Gen."= mar. (1) Samuel Taylor, and had a dau. Elizabeth Mills; mar. (2) Henry Fletchall, name changed to Fletcher, had ch: John, Sarah, Mary, Hannah; 1889 "Port. & Biog. Album Vermilion Co. IL"= Henry Fletcher, Quaker, b. IRE, joined Quaker Church, to US 1793 to Philadelphia for several years, to Warren & Clinton Co. OH 1804/06; m. 1806 Mrs. Sarah (Duncan) Taylor, 4 ch, Mary, Hannah, Sarah, John (youngest) b. 5/20/1815 Clinton Co. OH.
Sarah M. Taylor was named in her father Amos Duncan's will in 1805; in 1809 she signed a receipt for her share as Sarah Ann Taylor, the list of items refers to her as Sarah Ann Taylor (alias Fletcher), and includes hire of Wm. Duncan to move her to the western country and includes items purchased in Ohio land (Newb. Probate Box 6 pkg.9). In 1823, Sarah Ann Fletcher stated that Mahala Elmore of Clinton Co. OH was an heir of Ridgeway Elmore of SC (Newb. Probate Box 6 pkg.19). Henry Fletcher and wife Sarah Ann moved to Vermillion Co. IL fall 1836 with their son John Fletcher (1889 "Port. & Biog. Album Vermillion Co. IL")

2.3.      Amos DUNCAN Jr., b. ca 1790 SC, d. 1827 Newberry Co. SC; wife Margaret ----; "Newberry Co. SC Hist. and Gen. Society" by Summer gave Amos' children as George, Sarah, John, Hannah, Matilda & Elizabeth.
Amos Duncan purchased items in 1809 from the estate of John Dunkin (Newb. Probate Box 5, pkg.22); he was on the 1810 census in Newberry Co. SC (p.122a) with a daughter under age 10; he purchased items in 1815 from the estate of Rhoda Babb (Newb. Probate Box 1, pkg.22) and in 1818 from the estate of Ann Margaret Buzzard (Newb. Probate Box 23, pkg.23); and may be the Amos Duncan who was a neighbor in 1820 along with Margaret Duncan to the land sold by Samuel Cothran to Robert R. Nance, part of which had been owned by Richard Dunkin and Sarah Duncan (Newb. Deeds P2-47 and P2-48). Amos was on the 1820 census in Newberry Co. SC (p.150) (200110 - 01100); he bought land in 1822 (Newb. deed P2-441) from Francis Adkins, and sold it with wife Margaret in 1823 (Newb. deed O-151). He purchased items from the estate of Abner Atkins on Feb. 6-8, 1827 (Box 22, pkg.14).
Amos Duncan died by July 1, 1827 (Newb. Will Book L-211), without a will; his widow Peggy relinquished her right to administer the estate, William B. Herbert appointed admin. by court. The estate was settled in 1831 (Probate Box 40 pkg.12), and the heirs were the widow Margaret Duncan who received 1/3, and Sarah A. Duncan, George Duncan, John Duncan, Hannah Duncan, Matilda Duncan, and Elizabeth Duncan who received 1/6 each. The widow and children have not been identified later. This is probably not the Margaret Parham formerly Duncan in 1828 who was condemned for her marriage out of unity, if that Margaret Parham is the one who died in 1837 age 73y, buried in the Quaker cemetery in Newberry Co. SC. His children were likely born 1813-1825.

2.4.      William DUNCAN, b. ca 1792 SC; may have moved to OH or IN.
This may be the William Duncan who was paid in 1809 to move Sarah Duncan Taylor to OH (Newb. Probate Box 6, Pkg.9).
There is a second, slightly older Quaker William Duncan, b. ca 1777, in Newberry Co. SC; that William was the son of John Duncan, wives Rachel Howell, Mrs. Rachel Huffman, and Margaret (Smith) Edmonson, and grandson of Richard Duncan from Fairfax Co. VA. See that section for more references.

2.5.      George DUNCAN, b. ca 1794 SC; mar. bef. 1819 to Miss Murdock, dau. of William Murdock.
In 1815, George Duncan purchased items from the estate of Isaac Davenport (Newb. Probate Box 357, pkg.66), and in 1820 from the estate of William Owens (Newb. Probate Box 11, pkg.28); in Jan. 1819 he received 111a on Beaverdam Creek as his share of the estate of William Murdock (Newb. Deed P2-307); and mortgaged it in Feb. 1819 (Deed N-26). He was on the 1820 census in Newberry Co. SC (p.125) with a daughter under age 10. The 1909 "History of Clay Co. IN" said his two sons Giles W. Duncan (b.1815 SC, 1850 Greene Co. IN, d.1879 IA) and George William Duncan (b.1817 SC, 1840 Clay Co. IN, d.1860 Clay Co. IN) came to Clay Co. IN. He has not yet been identified later, nor has his wife's first name been determined. It is possible his wife was dead in 1819 since she was not named in the distribution of William Murdock's land.

      *      One Catherine D. DUNCAN, b. 1796 SC, was on the 1860 Newberry Co. SC census (p.221) with George Duncan b.1819-20 SC, Sophia (age 40 in 1850, age 32 in 1860) b. SC, and children John W. b. 1840, Catherine Rachel or Rachel Catherine b. 1848 SC; George (carpenter and mechanic) and Sophia and children are in Richland Co. SC in 1850 (p.5). near Francis Duncan 35 SC waggoner, wife Ann 34 SC, and children; Francis and Ann have were not in SC in 1860.
There are Quaker Catherine Duncans in Newberry Co.: Caty Duncan owed for cloth by estate of Thomas Clark in 1808 (Newb. Probate Box 2 pkg.28), Catherine Duncan purchased items from estate of Samuel Cannon in 1827 (Probate Box 25, Pkg.10), and probably Catherine Duncan on the 1830 census (p.138) (0011 - 0111,001). The Catherine Duncan on the 1840-1860 census was Catherine Herring, the widow of Absalom Duncan, whose parents are unidentified.

      *      Absalom DUNCAN, unidentified parents; b.1774-84, d. 1831 Newberry Co. SC (Probate indexed Box 40 #960, pkg. 87, admin. Silas Wood, appr. incl. Silas & Ephraim Suber); wife Catherine Herring, dau. of John George Herring who d. 1812. This Absalom Duncan could be the son of John Duncan son of Robert Duncan & Sarah Turner from Louisa Co. VA.
Absalom is on the 1800 census in Lexington Co. SC (p.339) both he and wife age 16-26, and a son under age 10. He has not been identified on the census in 1810. In 1811, Absalom Duncan of Fairfield Co. bought land in Newberry Co. SC (Newb. Deed J-661). In 1815, Absolom Duncan and wife Catherine (alias Herring) received a share of land of the estate of John George Herring (?Deed C-28); in 1819 their land adj. land sold by Henry Ederington Sr. of Fairfield Co. SC to Jacob Loaner (Newb. Deed P2-191, "Abraham" Duncan). Absalom was on the 1820 census in Newberry Co. SC (p.139) (100201 - 11010) and 1830 (p.81) (0001,0011 - 0001,0011).

Catherine Duncan is on the 1840 Newberry Co. SC census (p.230) (0000,1 - 0000,3001); on the 1850 census (p.238) age 55 and 1860 (p.287) age 70, apparently the widow of Absalom Duncan since in 1850 she had Rebecca E. Duncan age 33 b. SC & son J.D. age 9 living with her. George Duncan, d. 1847, left widow Rebecca (Cook) who married second in 1858 to Wesley Frank Dawkins; George was on the 1840 census of Newberry Co. SC (p.231), and his probate record is indexed (Box 79 #2000, pkg.202, admin. Jacob Cook (info of Mrs. Dawkins).
Mary Ann Duncan, b.1815 SC, and Sarah Duncan, b.1820 SC, and Sarah's children Susan 6 and Catherine 4, were on the 1850 census in Newberry Co. SC (p.236), about 30 households from Catherine Duncan.

2.6.      John DUNCAN, b. ca ? 1796 SC; moved out of the state by 1829 per Equity Record 14-7 for father Amos; perhaps to OH or IN.
This is probably the John Duncan whose land adj. that sold by Jesse Coate to Isaiah Duncan in 1822 (Deed O-20). This may be the John Duncan on the 1830 Newberry Co. SC census (p.106) (1110,1 - 2000,2).

2.7.      Elizabeth DUNCAN, b. ca 1797 SC; married Charles Inman, perhaps son of Benjamin Inman who died 1799 (Probate Box 10 pkg.8), will witnessed by John Duncan, Samuel Duncan an appraiser; lived in Greene Co. IN in 1814 per Newb. Deed P-419.

2.8.      Eli DUNCAN, b. 1798 SC; married in Greene Co. IN on 7 July 1822 to Rebecca Stephenson b. 1801 Shelby Co. KY. Eli Duncan witnessed deeds in 1814 (P-419, P-421, P-422) from his siblings for their part in his father's land. He is on the census in 1830 Greene Co. IN (p.158), and probably on the 1840 census in Sangamon Co. IL (p.20, Elijah Duncan); and 1850 Edgar Co. IL (p.156)

2.9.      Joshua DUNCAN, b. ca 1800 SC, married Maria Shoemaker in Greene Co. IN (1884 "Hist. Greene & Sullivan Cos. IN"). Joshua Duncan had moved to IN per Equity Record 14-7 filed 1829 for his father Amos, and lived in Greene Co. IN when he sold (Newb. Deed P-421) his share of Amos' land to Isaiah Duncan. He was on the 1830 census in Greene Co. IN (p.156) (1000,1 - 1100,1) and 1840 (p.111) (0000,001 - 1111,01).

2.10.      Hannah L. DUNCAN, b. ca 1802 SC; married Obediah Winters in 1829 (1884 "Hist. Greene & Sullivan Cos. IN"). In 1829, Obediah Winter & wife Hanna of Greene Co. IN sold their share of her father's land (Newb. SC Deed P-422).

      3.      ? John DUNCAN, b. ca 1750; there is no proof he is the son of Sarah; see John, son of Richard.
John Duncan witnessed the 1779 deed (Newb. C-306) of Sarah Duncan (widow of Samuel) of Edgefield Co. SC to her son Samuel Duncan; the other witnesses were Enos Elmore? and James Hall.
      *      One John Duncan owned land in 1799 adj. William O'Neal decd, when Abijah O'Neall and Hugh O'Neall sold 35a on Bush River to Elisha Ford; other neighbors were John Embree and Elisha Ford. RICHARD DUNCAN, b. 4/23/1722 MD, baptized 6/10/1723 in All Hallows Parish, Anne Arundel Co. MD, wife unknown, died by 1803; probably a brother of Samuel Duncan; parents were Patrick Duncan and wife Mary of Baltimore and Anne Arundel Co. MD 1709-1729. NOTE: The name is frequently spelled Dunkin in the records, as well as Duncan.
Richard Dunkin, weaver, bought 100a in 1748 in Fairfax Co. VA from Harman and Jane Cox, wit. Samuel Dunkin (Fairfax Deed B-355), and in 1756, of Cameron Parish, sold the 100a where he then lived (no wife's dower released) to John Anderson, who resold it to William Moor in 1756 (Fairfax deed D-393/395). Harman and Jane Cox had land on Goose Creek sold 1753 to Samuel Harris, witnessed by Samuel and Richard Dunkin (Fairfax deed C-655); this area was settled by Quakers.
Harman Cox (if the same person) had moved to Randolph Co. NC by 1792, when he sold land in Loudoun Co. VA (formed from Fairfax Co. in 1758) to Joseph Janney, which adj. land Cox had sold to Richard Dunkin. (Loudoun Deed U-132). According to Harold Hopkins, there was a Quaker settlement in Randolph Co. NC on Cane Creek where it emptied into the Sandy River. The material he sent shows no Duncans as members, but the Quaker records have not been searched.
Richard, Samuel and Joshua were voters in 1755 in Fairfax Co. VA, and Richard was sued by Charles Tyler in 1756 (Fairfax court records).
In 1767, Richard Dunkin had a survey of 200a on Bush Creek in old Berkeley Co. SC, adj. Samuel Dunkin, Hannah Coote (Cook) and David Moat (Meat) (Land Plat 14-497), granted him in 1771 (Grant 23-163) and memorialized in 1771 (Mem. 10-373)
One Richard Dunkin was on the 1790 census in Newberry Co. SC (p.77) (1 male over 21, 1 male under 21, 3 females).
Richard Dunkin may have been deceased by 1786 when his son John Duncan had a survey of 80a on waters of Bush River adj. his own land (Survey C-213), which was sold by John Duncan in 1803 simultaneously with Richard Dunkin's grant (Newb. Deed F-259).
Richard Dunkin was deceased by 1803, when his (oldest?) son & heir John Dunkin Jr. and wife Rachel of Edgefield Co. SC sold to Amos Dunkin, Richard's 200a grant in 1771 and John's 80a grant in 1787, both on Bush River (Newberry Deed F-259). Amos Dunkan & wife Elizabeth in turn sold 112a on the same date to Isaac Hollingsworth, being part of this land as well as part of a grant to Sarah Dunkin (Newb. Deed G-281); the 112a later became the property of Robert R. Nance (Newb. Deed P2-48). By 1822, 40-1/2a of Richard's grant had come to the hands of Jesse Coate, a free negro, who sold it to Isaiah Duncan (Newb. Deed O-20) who in turn sold it to Jacob Cook in 1823 (Newb. Deed O-351).
The only proven child of Richard Duncan (or Dunkin):

      1.      John DUNCAN, b. ca 1749-1754, d. 1809 Newberry Co. SC, the (oldest?) son and heir of Richard Duncan in 1803; married Rachel Howell before 1774 (mother of Martha Williams b. 1774 per family info of W.T. Cotten); married by 1790 to Mrs. Rachel Huffman, widow of Jacob Huffman, Rachel d. 12/11/1805; married last Margaret (Smith) Edmondson, mother of John Edmondson and the wife of Daniel Stewart.
      *      In 1828 at the Springfield MM, Guilford Co. NC, one Margaret Parham, formerly Duncan, of Bush River MM, had been condemned for her marriage out of unity. In 1829, one Margaret Parham (Parkam) was a neighbor to the 360a of Amos Duncan on Beaverdam Creek of Bush River in a deed from Joshua Duncan to Isaiah Duncan of Joshua's interest in the land (Newb. Deed P-421). One Margaret Parham d. 7/27/1836, age 73 years (b.1763), and was buried in the Quaker Cemetery 3-1/2 mi. south of Newberry, SC. This cannot be the younger Margaret with 6 minor children in 1827 who was the widow of Amos Duncan Jr. son of Amos Sr. son of Samuel.
John Duncan had a survey in 1786 of 80a on waters of Bush River adj. his own land (Survey C-213), granted him in 1787 in the 96th District (Grant 18-284 and 20-292; Land Plat 18-134 indexed). In 1803, John Dunkin Jr. and wife Rachel of Edgefield Co. SC sold land in Newberry Co. SC to Amos Dunkin, the land being the 200a grant to John's father Richard Dunkin in 1771, and an "8a" (80a) grant to John himself in 1787 on Bush River. There was an older John Duncan in a different section of Newberry Co. SC in 1802 who moved to Buncombe Co. NC with wife Jane, this John was born in 1738 and was the son of John who settled on Duncan's Creek in 1755.
In March 1790, in Newberry Co. SC, Rachel Duncan was appointed admin. of estate of Jacob Huffman decd., appraisers to be Samuel Cannon, Joshua Reeder, James Cassells, John Cannon. (Newb. Deed H-98), and on the same date deeded the 100a to Andrew McDaniel (Newb. Deed H-99).
John Dunkin is on the 1790 census in Edgefield Co. SC (p.65) (1 male over 21, 3 males under 21, 5 females).
In 1790, John Dunkin had 249a surveyed for him in Edgefield Co. on Clouds Creek, adj. his own line (indexed Land plat 31-373), granted him in 1793 (Grant 34-83). Clouds Creek was later in Saluda Co. SC when it was formed from Edgefield Co. in 1896, but no cemetery record has yet been found for the family.
In 1793, John Dunkin had 280 surveyed for him in Edgefield Co. adj. his own land and Thomas Dean (Land Plat 32-470 indexed), granted him in 1795 (Grant 41-488). George Deen had a 16a survey in 1803 on Cloud's Creek adj. John Dunkin, and Thomas Dean had a 200a survey in 1802 adj. John Dunkin and Abel Dunkin, recorded in 1803, on Cloud's Creek & Little Saluda (Plat? p.183 & 181, from SC DAR Rec.); the 200a survey for Thomas Dean was granted to Abel Dunkin in 1803 (Grant 50-50).
In 1793, John Duncan purchased items from the estate of William Miles Sr. (Newb. Probate Box 357, pkg.34); In i795, he was a bondsman for John Justis, admin. of William Gilliam decd, and was owed money by the estate (Newb. (Probate Box 356, Pkg.48) as did Amos Duncan.
      *      In 1800, one Rachel Duncan is on the census in Newberry Co. SC (p.73) (00200 - 00001) and one John Duncan is on the census in Edgefield Co. SC (p.177b) (01001 - 01001). John Duncan I and John II are named as Quakers in 1801 at Bush River MM ("Quaker Fams. of SC & GA")
In April 1806, John Dunkin deeded 150a to William Dunkin, and 150a to Jeremiah Dunkin, and 1/4a and the saw mill to Abel Dunkin; witnesses included the other two sons and also his dau. Rachel Dunkin (Edgef. deeds 29-405, 406, 407). In June 1806, John Dunkin of Edgefield Co. sold to Isaac Eamondson 100a on a branch of Saluda River adj.       In 1810, the Newberry Co. Probate court ordered Margaret Dunkin to declare the property she had that formerly belonged to the estate (Newb. Probate Box 5, Pkg.22, 1809), and the reply by "Margaret Edmundson" signed Margaret Dunkin, widow of John Dunkin, said she had an interest in the estate, that Abel Dunkin the exec. gave her a negro and prperty to let the will stand. Payments were made in 1810 to Thos. Deen, Wm. Dunkin and Jeremiah Dunkin for part of their legacies; Abel Dunkin bought the 100a from his father's estate. In 1810, Henry Hilbourn applied for division of the personal estate on behalf of his wife Rachel, and it was divided among 4 children according to the will (Newb. Probate Box 5, Pkg.22). In 1811, Henry Hilborn and wife Rachel filed suit in Laurens Co. SC Equity Court (1811, #4) against Abel Dunkin exec. of John Dunkin, that John died about 3/24/1809 without changing his will but his wife Rachel had died 12/11/1805 before John; the Hilborns claim additional money due them from sale of the rest of the estate.
In 1809, Margaret Duncan maiden name Smith appeared in Newberry Co. SC and said she and John McClain and Henry Clark saw David Smith of Padgets Creek sign a deed for 10a to the trustees of the Quakers, Padgets Creek Meeting, in 1778 (Union Co. SC Deed K-37).       *      One William Duncan is on the census in Edgefield Co. SC in 1810 near Samuel Duncan (p.76) (10010 - 00010); another William Duncan is there in 1810 near Nelson Duncan (p.91) (00001 - 10101). There is no William Duncan near Abel and Jeremiah Duncan (p.86), so it is likely he moved out of the state.
      *      One William Duncan b. ca 1800-05, is on the 1830 census in Edgefield Co. SC (p.181) (1210,1 - 0011,01). He has not been identified otherwise.

This is apparently the William Duncan on the 1830 census in Newberry Co. SC (p.80) (0111,0000,1 - 0102,11). This might be the William Duncan, wife Julia, son of Robert Duncan & Sarah (Turner) from Louisa Co. VA, who had six children born 1810-1821.
In 1850, one Phebe Duncan, age 84 (b.1766 NC) was living in Edgefield Co. SC with Malinda Parmer or Farmer b. 1819 SC and her two children (p.87). It is possible this is the widow of William.
