Some more Duncan families, possibly Quaker, of Newberry and Edgefield Co. SC

NELSON DUNCAN, b. ca 1740-1745 or perhaps earlier; wife unknown but probably died bef. 1775; Quaker, 3/25/1775 he and children Richard, Elisha and Milcha were received at the Bush River MM, Newberry Co. SC. This Nelson cannot be the son of Richard Dunkin, b. 1722 MD, since Richard's (oldest) son was John who sold Richard's land in 1803. There is no indication that Samuel Dunkin, d. 1770, wife Sarah, had a son older than Amos who sold part of Samuel's land in 1779 and Sarah's land in 1803. See the earlier Newsletter Vol.5#1, Jan. 1997.
In 1769, one Nelson Dunkin witnessed a deed recorded in Charleston SC in 1774 (Deed L4-133) from Reason Nelson of St.Marks Parish SC to Henry Donworth, for 200a granted Reason Nelson for 500a, on a branch called the Great Branch; St. Marks Parish would have included the 96th District which included Newberry Co. SC; the "Great Branch" could be the Broad River, but this is a guess. In 1773, Nelson Dunkin was one of many people who owed money to Hennery Dixon of Craven Co. SC, mentioned in Dixon's will of 21 Nov. 1773 recorded in Charleston SC 1774-1778 (Will TT-252), which left all of Henry Dixon's estate to Hugh Johnson and appointed him exec.; the will was witnessed by John Pope and Nealson Dunkin.
Nelson Duncan was a quaker; in 1775, he and children Richard, Elisha and Milcha were received at the Bush River MM, Newberry Co. SC. In Nov. 1776, John and Nelson Duncan were dismissed, reason not given, but the Rev. War had started (there is no indication of a Nelson Duncan in the war, however). In June 1787, Richard and Nelson Duncan were dismissed, moved. (Hinshaw)
In Jan. 1776, Nelson and John Duncan witnessed the deed of Samuel Duncan, Yeoman, and wife Rebecca, for land on Palmotars Branch of Bush River in Newberry Co. SC (Newb. Deed A-782).
In 1783, Nelson Dunkin had a warrant for 250a, surveyed in 1785 on Bush Creek of 96th Dist. (Greenville Dist. Survey B-290), granted him in 1786 (Grant 9-598 and 11-657; plat 16-140 indexed). No deed has been found for the sale or disposition of this 250a, which would have been in Newberry Co. SC.

************

Mary DUNCAN, widow of ----, possibly Miss or Mrs. Mary Johnson; mar. by 1820, of Edgefield Co. SC. Her husband is probably related to Nelson Duncan, in Walton Co. GA in 1830. Lamuel Johnson had 287a surveyed in 1789 on Beaverdam Creek waters of Clouds Creek in 96th Dist, granted him in 1790 (Grant 27-351, also indexed grant 25-109). ************

Samuel DUNCAN, b. ca ? 1751; mar. Rebecca ---- bef. 1776. It is possible but perhaps not likely that this is the same Samuel who had a wife Mary Embree with children born 1777-1782, who was the son of Samuel d. 1770 and wife Sarah. See the earlier Newsletter Vol.5#1, Jan. 1997. Samuel and wife Rebecca are connected to Nelson Duncan and that John Duncan.
In 1773, Samuel Dunkin had 144-1/4a surveyed (Land Plat 14-509) on Palmeter's Branch of Bush Creek in old Berkeley Co., granted him in 1774 (Royal Grant 32-554) and memorialized in 1775 (Mem. 13-322). In Jan. 1776, Samuel Duncan, Yeoman, and wife Rebecca sold this land to John Ryley, hatter, wit. incl. John Duncan and Nelson Duncan (Newb. SC Deed A-782).
      *      One Samuel Duncan (Dunkin) was a Loyalist in 1780 and/or 1781, a private in Col. Daniel Clary's Reg. Dutch Fork Militia, 96 Brigade. Dutch Fork was between the fork of the Broad and Saludy Rivers. The men in the 96th Brigade mustered from the 96th District. One Samuel Duncan was a Private under Major William Cunningham in the Little River Regiment, 96th Brigade, from Nov. (1781?) to Jan. 1782; this may be the same Pvt. Samuel Duncan in Col. Thomas Pearson's (Little River) Reg., 96th Brigade, posted on James Island SC, from Dec. 1781 through Oct. 1782, including a posting at Charleston SC from Aug. to Dec. 1782. Elijah DUNCAN, b. 4/ 1757 Fairfax Co. VA (Rev. Pension S-3309), father may be Richard b. 1722 MD since Elijah named a son Richard; died 12/14/1840 (Rev. Pension); wife Caty? (Catherine?) ---- named in his will dated Dec. 1833 in Smith Co. TN (DeKalb Co. TN Will A-23 proved 1/1841) but died by 1840. There is no proof that Elijah Duncan was in Newberry Co. SC or was ever a Quaker, but there is strong evidence that Richard Duncan and Samuel Duncan, Quakers, moved from Fairfax Co. VA to Newberry Co. SC ca 1765.
Elijah enlisted in Caswell Co. NC for 3 years, served 18 months himself and the balance by a substitute, in the 10th Regt., Lytle or Taylor's Company, Capt. Wilson, of the NC Continental Line, and was on the roster in 1783. (Army Accts). Elijah Duncan was on the tax lists in Caswell Co. NC from 1781 to 1788; in 1782 he was bondsman for the marriage of Nancy Baxter to Samuel Welch in Caswell Co. NC.
      *      One Elijah Duncan, Private in the NC Continental line, had Entry #171 for 274a, issued 10/22/1783, which he transferred to James Sanders 12/1/1783; in July 1784, Sanders assigned it to Donas Condra, James Shaw a witness ("TN Gen. Records" by Whitley Vol.4). This was one of many documents examined in the Glasgow Land Fraud Papers 1783-1800 for NC Rev. War Bounty Land in TN (book of that title by Pruitt), and noted "#171. Soldier: Elijah Duncan: 274a, drawn by S. Parker, certified by 'no certificate'; assignments: Duncan to James Saunders, test. A. Tatom, J. Saunders to Dennis Condra, test. James Shaw, appears fair; remarks: mustered & deserted soon after. Book J, warrants from Martin Armstrong's Office."
Elijah Duncan is on the 1790 census in Lincoln Co. NC (p.113), 1 male over 21, 1 male under 21, 5 females. In 1800, Elijah Duncan sold 200a on Indian Creek in Lincoln Co. NC to Henry Livengood (Lincoln deed 22-159). No deed has been found when Elijah Duncan obtained the land.
In 1799, Elijah Dunkin bought 150a on the long branch of Nob Creek in Rutherford Co. NC from William Killen (Rutherf. Deed 12/4-148) and sold it to John Finley in 1803 (Rutherf. deed 22/23-348). Elijah Duncan is on the 1800 census in Rutherford Co. NC (p.107) (10010 - 13010). Elijah's Rev. Pension Application in 1833 stated he lived in Caswell Co. NC when he enlisted, then in Rutherford Co. NC for some time, then moved to Smith Co. TN.
In 1813, Elijah Duncan recorded his ear mark for his cattle in Smith Co. TN. (County Court Min. 3/27/1813). On 13 July 1813, Elijah Duncan was granted 100a (Grant #4875) on Cedar Bluff Creek of Smith's fork of Caney Creek of Cumberland River in Smith Co. TN, in consideration of military service by Abram Milin, Warrant #5088 in 1797, Entry #5151 in 1810, and surveyed in 1810, which had been assigned Elijah by the heirs of Milen (General Grant G-96).
Elijah was on the 1820 census in Smith Co. TN (p.53) (000001 - 00001). (p.53). He has not been located on the 1830 census. In 1832, age 78, he applied for a Rev. War Pension (S-3309) in Smith Co. TN, and in 1833 said John Davis of VA had the family Bible; his heirs in 1840 were Elijah Duncan, Jane Kimbil, Nancy Ban, Catherine Oweing, Abby Davis, Richard Duncan.
In 1835, Elijah Duncan had a grant (#12786) of 25a in Smith Co. TN, Entry #1085 and surveyed in 1827, on the waters of Hammons Creek, adj. his 100a (Middle TN Grant 15-554).
Elijah Duncan was on the 1840 census in DeKalb Co. TN (formed 1837-8 from Cannon, Warren and White Co. TN) (p.241), as one male 90-100, he a Rev. Pensioner age 90. He died in 1840 in DeKalb Co. TN; his will (A-23) written in 1833 in Smith Co. TN named wife "Cooee" or "Caty" and children Nancy Barr, Alby Davis, Jane Vanatta, Caty Owens, Richard Duncan, Elijah Duncan; execs. Jacob Fite and Thomas Lawrence; wit. John Reynolds and Moses Fletcher. (Much research has been done on this family and other Quaker Duncans by Mr. Louis Boone, Independence, MO)

She was the mother of the following:

In 1773, Robert Duncan, planter, sold to Isham Gunter the land where he lived, and farm animal and furniture and tools, wit. Geo. Dunkin, Wm. Johnston (Chatham NC Deed A-354). The bill of sale was proved by William Johnson in 1774. In 1779, one Isham Gunter was granted 275a on both sides Sinking Creek adj. One Isham Gunter witnessed a deed in 1779 from John & Mary Elett (Elliot, Ellitt) to William Hatley for land on Haw River (Chatham NC Deed B-155).
This Robert Duncan could be the husband of Elizabeth instead of a son of Elizabeth.

      3.      George DUNCAN, b. ca 1755; had enough estate in 1778 to make a will, but no mention of wife or children, therefore age 21-23?, was a Private on the NC Muster Roll of Capt. MATTHEW DUNCAN, b. ca 1745, mar. Mary ---- ca 1788?. See Matthew Duncan, son of ---- & Elizabeth of Chatham Co. NC.
In 1789 and 1790, Matthew Duncan filed suits against John Frederick and against Robt. Hart & Arthur Watson in the Edgefield Co. Court (Min. p.278, 287, 317, 324). Matthew had a land grant in 1790, surveyed in 1787, in the 96th Dist. for 160a on waters of Clouds Creek, plat certified 1789 (Grant 27-36, Plat 25-39 indexed). In 1790, Matthew Dunkin had a grant of 684a surveyed in 1787 in the same area, adj. Elkhardt Sawyer and Thomas Haines, plat cert. 1789 (Grant 27-37, Plat 25-155 indexed).
There is no Matthew Duncan on the 1800 SC census; however, there is a Mary Duncan in 1800 Edgefield Co. SC (p.177b) (01010 - 01010), neighbors Robley?, Littlefield, Nancy?, Banks, Celte?, Cotney, Gilliam. There is also a Martha Duncan in 1800 Edgefield Co. SC (p.171) (00001 - 12101) near Joshua Duncan, Peter Duncan, and Samuel Duncan.
In 1802, Matthew Dunkin & wife Mary deeded 130a to Joshua Dunkin, partly part of a grant to Matthew in 1790, wit. Jeremiah Williams and Samuel Dunkin, reg. & dower release in Orangeburg Co. SC (Edgef. Deed 29-189), and 100a to Samuel Dunkin on Mary Prescot's line, part of grant to Matthew 1790, wit. Jeremiah Williams and Joshua Dunkin, also reg. in Orangeburg Co. SC (Edgef. deed 29-191), and 160a to Peter Duncan, part of grant to Matthew 1790, wit. Thomas Harrison, also in Orangeburg Co. SC (Edgef. deed 33-362). Sherman burned the Orangeburg Co. SC Courthouse in 1865 but a few records from 1825 were saved (Leonardo Andrea file).
In 1815, Matthew Duncan bought 187a in Pendleton Co. SC (later Anderson or Pickens Co.) on the branches of Beaverdam Creek waters of Savanah River, wit. Jeremiah Williams Sr., Thomas Williams (Anderson SC Deed M-414). Matthew is on the 1820 census in Pendleton Co. SC (p.225) (300001 - 11011). This is probably the same person since Jeremiah Williams was a witness for Matthew in Edgefield Co. SC and may have moved with Matthew Duncan to Pendleton Co. SC.
Matthew Duncan has not been identified later.

      1.      Samuel DUNCAN, b. ca 1770, mar. ca 1794 to Seley ----; three children by 1800.
Samuel was on the 1800 census in Edgefield Co. SC (p.171) (11100 - 20100) near Joshua, Martha and Peter Duncan. In 1802, he bought 100a from Matthew Duncan on Mary Prescot's line and the Saluda River, granted to Matthew in 1790, wit. Joshua Dunkin, release by wife Mary in Orangeburg Co. (Edgef. deed 29-191). In 1802, he witnessed the deed from Mathew Duncan, planter, to Joshua Dunkin of 130a on Saluda River, partly grant to Matthew in 1790, reg. on oath of Samuel in Orangeburg Co., release by Matthew's wife Mary in Orangeburg Co. (Edgef. deed 29-189). In 1805, Samuel and Peter Dunkin witnessed a deed from William Prescot & wife Elizabeth to Joshua Duncan of 120a on Saluda River adj. Peter Dunkin (Edgef. Deed 29-190). Samuel is on the 1810 census in Edgefield Co. SC (p.76) (31010 - 21010). In 1818, Samuel Dunkin & wife Seley sold 385a on Saluda River adj. Peter Dunkin to Daniel Smith (Edgef. deed 35-406). He has not been identified later.
      *      One Samuel Duncan had a wife Sarah or Suzanne Player or Prayer; he was in St.Louis Co. MO in 1796 when he had a grant for 240 arpens of land (St.Louis MO Deed L-107), 1799 when he had a grist mill, and in 1801 when he and his son Amos Duncan exchanged land (St.Louis MO Deed 2-489). His will in 1802, probated in 1816, named wife Sarah or Suzanne Player or Prayer and unnamed children. His son Amos Duncan may be on the Wilkinson Co. MS census in 1805, 1 male over 21, 3 females; in 1820 Amos Duncan of Natchitoches Parish LA sold the land he had received in exchange from his father in 1801 (St.Louis MO Deed L-107), and also sold his father's land as the heir (L-108). Amos has not been identified later.

In 1802, Joshua Dunkin and Jeremiah Williams witnessed the deed for 100a on Mary Prescot's line on Saluda River from Matthew Duncan to Samuel Dunkin (Edgef. deed 29-191). In 1805, Joshua Duncan bought 120a from William and Elizabeth Prescot on South and waters of Saluda River adj. Peter Dunkin's land, wit. Peter and Samuel Dunkin (Edgef. Deed 29-190)
Joshua Duncan was on the 1810 census in Edgefield Co. SC (p.77) (10010 - 10010). This is probably the Joshua Dunkin who was in the War of 1812 in Youngblood's Regt. SC Mil, Private, along with Nelson Duncan (Compiled Rec.), probably in Capt. John Millers Co.
Joshua Duncan was on the 1820 census in Edgefield Co. SC (p.80) (210001 - 11111) but he has not been found in 1830 or later.
