      Pg.295: Hon. James F. Duncan, clerk of board of supervisors of Cochise Co., Democrat, citizen of Tombstone. Born Philadelphia, PA, June 15, 1839; his father John Duncan was native of New York, and with his brother Tom, constructed in 1842 the Globe mills of Philadelphia, where he died the following year. Up to age 12, James F. Duncan remained in Philadelphia, attended school; 1854 went to Mount Union, where learned blacksmith trade; 1861 sent to oil regions near present site of Rouseville; outbreak of Civil war returned to Mount Union, enlisted Aug. 10, 1861, in Co. A, 46th PA Infantry; discharged July 31, 1865. For 12 years worked in PA oil regions, around Foster, Emlenton, Parker City & St. Petersburg, Clarion Co. ... In 1879 removed to AZ; 1890 to Tombstone. Married 1871 to Mary E. Miniger, who d. at Westfield, NY, Oct. 3, 1882, leaving one son, Lemuel D. Duncan, who at this time is serving government in the Philippines.

      Deed Book L, pg.22: 14 Oct. 1826, James Arthur of York Dist. SC; having special confidence in my stepson James Duncan, and in consideration of the sum of $1 paid by him the said James Duncan, grant to William R. Duncan, elder son of said James Duncan, one undivided half of the plantation I now live on containing in all 150a, granted to Philip Walker on waters of Stoney Fork of Fishing Creek on both sides of Davids? branch, and said 75a the amount now conveyed to be layed off in the north corner of said original; bounded by a line running from a post oak in N. corner of said survey NE by vacant land at time of survey now T. Blake's land, NW now the property of F?.       Will Book B, pg.3: 25 Oct. 1860, will of William R. Duncan; wife Jane M. have 60 acres land where dwelling now stands; each of my children Mary M. and James S. have 60 acres of land each and that Jane M. their mother and my wife have full control until they are of full age; and should she find it to be to their interest to sell said lands she can do so during her widowhood, and if she should marry, I will for my children not to pay any board while on said land; I will that all my personal property be sold and a good house obtained for my wife; what corn there is on hand is for the use of the family, not to be sold. This Bible belonged to her Grandparents, William Roddey Duncan and Jane Minerva (Boyd) Duncan, his wife. The Bible was published in 1860 by William W. Harding, Philadelphia.

            William Roddey Duncan and Jane Minerva (Boyd) Duncan migrated to Bradley County, Ark., fall of 1857, and lived in the vicinity of Johnsville. She was the daughter of Samuel Boyd and Isabella Farris Crawford, his wife, of Chester County, South Carolina. After Wm. Roddey Duncan's death Jane Minerva (Boyd) Duncan married Thomas Lyle.

      Pg. 689: I. Judge Edwin S. Duncan came to this country in early manhood, having in his possession old VA patents for land, and was owner of large tracts in that state, from which he derived a fair income. He represented this country in England under President Monroe.
      II. James Duncan, son of Edwin S. Duncan, d. at 27 years, leaving one child, James. He married Columbia, dau. of Judge John C. Jackson, who was prime factor in securing appointment of Stonewall Jackson to West Point, being a relative.
      III. James Jackson Duncan, law graduate of Univ. of VA, Democrat, m. Maude Lee, dau. of Judge George H. Lee of VA. After the war, Judge Lee was chief counsel of B&O R.R.
      IV. George Lee Duncan, son of James Jackson Duncan, b. Nov. 30, 1872, worked at banks. Episcopal Church member. Owned 200a farm on Elk Creek. Member of Sons of Rev., Mason, Elks. Married in Philadelphia, July 27, 1898, to Gertrude Smith, a native of Clarksburg, dau. of Ashel G. and Anna Smith.

      Deed Book 40, pg.173: (blank) Jan. 1855, Edwin S. Duncan to Columbia M. Duncan, both Harrison Co. VA, house and lot in Clarksburg, the lot was conveyed to Edwin S. Duncan by Lemuel Davisson on 22 April 1825, for life of Columbia M. Duncan with remainder in fee to her son James Jackson Duncan, but if said James Jackson Duncan dies without issue before Columbia, then remainder over to such of the children of John S.       Deed Book 52, pg.487 to 497: George Hoffman and wife vs. Prudence Duncan & others, Decree, Virginia. At a special term of the Circuit Court of Harrison Co. held 10 Jan. 1860, George Hoffman and Flora his wife late Flora Lee against Prudence Duncan, Hugh H. Lee, Gertrude Lee, Edwin S. Duncan, Earnest Duncan, Gay Duncan, James J. Duncan & Floride C. Duncan, Dfts. James Deven, Samuel Sheets, Gideon D. Camden Jr. and Luther Haymond, heretofore appointed commissioners to make partition of the real estate of Edwin S. Duncan decd among his widow, heirs and distributees, having filed their report of partition among the papers of this cause on 5 Oct. 1859, and the complainants having filed their exceptions thereto, and the cause coming on again to be heard on the bill, answers, replications, depositions and exhibits, ... was argued by counsel. On consideration whereof it is adjudged, ordered and decreed that Prudence Duncan, widow of said Edwin S. Duncan decd, do hold for her life a dower estate in and to the 481a in Harrison Co. on Gnatty Creek which was assigned to her by the commissioners as part of her dower estate in the lands of her late husband, which 481a is designated as Lot #1 in the plat marked "A" filed by the comrs., adj. south side Clarksburg and Buckhannon road, old Coburn house, road leading up Peeltree run, crossing the ford of Gnatty Creek, John McPherson's line, Rezin Queen's corner, David Greathouse's land. Prudence Duncan also to hold 65a ... known as the Hickman place, referred by lot or subdivision No. 1 on plat marked "B"; and to hold 15-1/4a adj. the town of Clarksburg on the west side of the Weston and Fairmont road generally known as the grave yard field (MAD: boundaries given, not copied here), Lot #2 on Plat "B".       Deed Book 52, pg.492 & later: George Hoffman & wife vs. Hugh H. Lee & others, Circuit Court held 19 March 1864; in chancery. William E. Lyon, J.R. Wright and John Stealey, three commrs. appointed to make partition among heirs of Edwin S. Duncan decd of that part of real estate which he died seized as was assigned to his widow Prudence Duncan as dower in his land, returned their report of partition, which being seen and inspected and no exceptions being taken, it is decreed it be approved and confirmed. That Flora Hoffman one of heirs hold lot on Gnatty Creek, lot 1 on plat made 22 April 1861 containing 70a; also a parcel near Clarksburg, part of graveyard field, containing 1 acre, being lot 3 on the plat. That Gertrude Despard have land on West Fork River, 65a known as Hickman place, lot 1 on Plat B, and one acre part of Graveyard field lot 2. That Hugh H. Lee have the brick house and lot on Turnpike Street in Clarksburg containing 4a & 16 poles, and the southern end of the graveyard field containing 7-1/2a. That John J. Duncan have land on Gnatty Creek 149-1/4a lot 5? (dark copy) and two acres. That Edwin S. Duncan have lot 3 on Gnatty Creek embracing the dwelling house, containing 69-1/2a, and lot 5 of the graveyard field, 1-1/2a. That Earnest Duncan have lot 4 (acres not given) and lot 4 of the graveyard field, 3/4a. That Gay Duncan have Lot 2 on Gnatty Creek, 42-3/4a, and lot 1 in graveyard field of 1-1/2a.       Additional information: There are deeds in Licking Co. OH (Deed Book UU/48, pg.310) and Muskingum Co. OH (Deed Book 3, pg.461) dated 9 Jan. 1843, James A. Duncan and wife Columbia M. and John S. Duncan and wife Floride C., to Michael D. Gitting, all of Harrison Co. VA; that Columbia M. and Floride C. Duncan are two of the heirs of the late John G. Jackson decd who are five in number, and as such are entitled to 1/5 the real estate of John G. Jackson in the state of OH; sell their interest to Michael A. Gitting for $2000, land part in Muskingum Co., part in Licking Co. and part in Knox.

McCray, for $600, $318.50 remaining unpaid, land on Little Kanawha River partly in Upshur and Lewis and perhaps in Braxton Cos. devised to us by George H. Lee, containing approximately 738a, being part of a survey made for said McCray of 1346a on Little Kanawha River at mouth of Buffalo Fork and all that part not assigned to Robert McCray, retaining lien. Witnesses A.W. Scott and W.V. McCracken for Henry & Hortensia H. Beeman of Perry Co. OH; Duncans in Harrison Co. WV.
      Additional Information: Monongalia Co. WV Deed (FHC film 840,576; SLC 8/24/88), Deed Book 10, pg.471: 12 Nov. 1828, Edwin S. Duncan & wife Prudence of Harrison Co. VA to Lunceford Jones, $100, lot of land in the swamps formerly owned by John and David Newlon & surrendered by them in their schedule on taking the oath of insolvency and purchased by the said Edwin S. Duncan. Rec. Harrison Co. VA 1 April 1830.

      Vol.2 pg.583: GEORGE LEE DUNCAN, banking enterprise in his native city of Clarksburg, Harrison Co.; public schools of Clarksburg, age 16 assumed position of bookkeeper and office clerk for R.T. Lowndes, and has been associated with him during the intervening years. In 1896 entered private bank of R.T. Lowndes & Co., 1905 became secretary & treasurer of newly established Lowndes Savings Bank & Trust Company; Mr. Duncan is president of WV Bank ... He and wife in Protestant Episcopal Church. In 1898 he married Miss Gertrude Smith, a dau. of the late A.G. Smith of Clarksburg; Mr. and Mrs. Duncan have four children: George Lee Jr., Elizabeth Rankin, Meade Lee and James Jackson. Mr. Duncan was born at Clarksburg on 30 Nov. 1872, and is a son of James Jackson Duncan and Maude (Lee) Duncan, who likewise were born and reared in this county and who are representatives of old, honored and influential families of this section of the state.

      Pg. 84-85: Local Government - VA and WV. ... James Allen was our first judge and held the first term of court at the house of James Robinson, May 26, 1818. The record of his term which ended October 14, 1830, is well preserved in the office of the circuit court. Edwin S. Duncan succeeded Judge Allen. His term was from May 25, 1831 to April 11, 1848. Judge Duncan was a native of Barbour County and a strong advocate of a system of free schools. Allen Taylor, an exchange judge, held the April Term, 1832, and Edward Johnson, also an exchange judge, held the September Term, 1842, for Judge Duncan. George H. Lee, succeeded Judge Duncan as regular judge of the circuit. His term began September 7, 1848 and ended September 11, 1849.

      Historic Sketch #27, Edwin Steele Duncan (MAD: no author given)
      Edwin Steele Duncan was born in Shenandoah Co. VA [1] June 18, 1789. His mother married Attorney James Allen when Duncan was a small child and moved with her family to Fincastle, county seat of Botetourt Co., where Allen was a judge. Duncan, educated in the schools of Shenandoah and Botetourt counties, read law in his stepfather's law office [2]. Duncan regarded Judge Allen so highly that later in life Duncan would give one of his sons the name James for the judge and another son the name John for the judge's son John James Allen (1797-1871). ....
      Duncan ... during the War of 1812 to serve with the VA militia as a staff officer in Col. Isaac Booth's Regiment on duty at Norfolk. He returned to his law practice after the war and in 1813 married Prudence Wilson, the daughter of William B. Wilson who was a son of Colonel Benjamin Wilson, pioneer in Randolph County and first clerk of the Harrison Co. Court. Duncan was named Commonwealth Attorney for Randolph Co. in 1814 [3]. ....

Abel G., b. in Chester, VT, in 1799; son of Jason Jr. and wife Lucy; grandson of Jason and wife Sarah (Gates), an early settler of Dummerston, VT, member of Legislature, JP, Judge, etc.; great-grandson of Simeon and wife Bridget (Richardson); and great-great-grandson of John, of Edinburgh, Scotland, who m. Sarah Dutton, and resided and d. in Worcester, Mass. Rev. Abel G. m. Sept. 23, 1828, Lucia A. Harlow of Harvard, Mass., who d. Oct. 12, 1851. He d. Apr. 23, 1870. Pastor of 1st Congregational Church many years. Mr. Duncan married three times -- the last wife surviving him. Children:

(ii) Laura M., b. in Freetown, Oct. 31, 1865; d. in 1867. (iii) Payson W., b. in Cambridge, Feb. 8, 1868; m. Oct. 23, 1901, Anna M. Plummer, dau. of Gordon Plummer of Brookline.
      iii. Lucia A., Dec. 20, 1832; m. Nov. 27, 1859, Henry Dean, son of Paddock Dean. She d. Apr. 1881. Ch: Joseph and Edward.
