Bastardy; Ord. that sd Powell give bond for the support of child begotten on the
body of one Winy Duncan & that he pay the said Wincy Duncan

pg.19) Feb. 1848, Ord. that Winy Duncan be required to deliver to the
Sheriff of this County her bastard Child, Alfred S. Duncan, to be
delivered by said Sheriff to Nicholas Powell, the said Alfred's reputed

Duncan vs. John W. Stewart & others; petition for division of real
estate. It appearing to the satisfaction of the court that John W. Stewart is a
non-resident of this state, it is hereby ord. that notice be given at the Court

Pg.212-3. WILLIAM A. McMAKIN, native of Nelson
Co., born Oct. 8, 1816, son of Charles McMakin, native of VA who came to KY in
early day with his parents and settled in Nelson Co., subsequently moved to Shelby
and Oldham Cos. He died at Lexington, IN. He married Elizabeth Duncan,
a native of SC and dau. of William Duncan, a native of the same State.
Four sons and three daus. were born to their union, and of this family, our
subject is the eldest. His grandfather, William McMakin, native of VA, came to
KY in 1802 and settled in Nelson Co., where he lived greater part of his life
and died in Louisville in 1849. Our subject farmed, now in La Grange Precinct;
he married in 1843 Enreth E. Ellis, native of Shelby Co. and dau. of Stephen
Ellis; one son and one dau., Henry and Julia (the latter deceased). Mrs. McMakin
died about 1847, member of Baptist Church. Mr. McMakin then married in 1852 to
Sarah M. Oglesby, native of Oldham Co. and dau. of Ellis and Jane (Yager)
Oglesby, children: Florence, Richard and Monchie (last two deceased). Democrat,
he in Baptist Church, she in Methodist Episcopal Church. (extract also from 1888

Duncan, of Martin's Ferry, a prominent attorney, was born in Allegheny
Co. PA, May 11, 1841. He is the son of Thomas Duncan, a native of
Pennsylvania, who was reared in Allegheny county, and learned the trade of
wool-carding. He became the owner of a carding mill about ten miles north of
Pittsburgh, on the Allegheny road, which he operated about forty years.
Disposing of this in 1862, he purchased a farm on which he resided until his
death, November 19, 1864. He was married in 1838, to Nancy Herdman, by whom he
had six children, of whom three besides the subject of this sketch, are living.
The mother also survives. George Duncan received his early education in
the common schools of Allegheny Co., and in the Valley academy, and when about
nineteen years old began the study of law with Thomas Howard and John D. Mahon,
of Pittsburgh. Removing subsequently to Columbiana Co. OH, he completed
his studies with J.D. King, and in November, 1865, he was admitted to the bar of
Mahoning Co. ... Columbiana Co. in 1867, he remained there seven years,
and then went to Norwalk, Ohio, which was his residence until he removed to
Martin's Ferry, in the spring of 1878. ... Mr. Duncan was married in
1863, to Maggie Hall, of Allegheny county, by whom he has three children: Thomas
M., Nannie V., and Lottie.

in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, February 16, 1846, son of James and Isabelle
(Stuart) Duncan. James Duncan and Isabelle Stuart were married in
Scotland, and to them were born six children: Janet, Charles, James, John,
Alexandriana and Alexander, all of whom were born in Scotland. After
coming to the United States three other children were born to them: Margaret,
Isabelle, and David. James Duncan emigrated with his family to
this country, settled in Champaign Co. OH, lived there the remainder of
his life, and was buried in that county. Charles Duncan was the only
member of the family who ever lived in Butler County ....

child when his parents came to this country and settled in Ohio. John Duncan
still regards Champaign County as his home, though he spends part of his time
with his son in Columbus. ...
