Marshall Duncan, b. 1783/84 NC, wife Hannah Miller, d. 1858 Sangamon Co. IL, son of James Duncan and Avy Shelton.

"Menard Co. IL Heritage Newsletter", Vol.5#1, Jan. 1991 (FHC book 977.3555 D25m; SLC 9/20/94, from PERSI index)
Pg.1-3: Duncan-Irwin Family Tradition, submitted by Milo Craig Brandt, Indianapolis, IN, which was dictated by Amanda Jane Duncan Brandt; the editor's notations are in [brackets].
Amanda Jane Duncan Brandt, born Menard Co. near Petersburg [born March 19, 1856 Rock Creek Precinct, the dau. of Elzy C. Duncan and Polly Ann Miller], 8 miles southwest from Petersburg, 15 miles northwest from Springfield. The county line between Menard and Sangamon ran between the farm and Salisbury, 2 miles from Salisbury. New Salem was on the "Big Road" about 2 miles south of Petersburg.
First pictures were taken at Petersburg, 15 years of age. Peter Cart schoolhouse [possibly means Peter Cartwright, a Methodist circuit rider who is said to have preached in every church and schoolhouse in the county, he was famous for his camp meetings], 15 years of age, schoolhouse close to Uncle Nathan Hartley [the 1874 platmap for T17 R6 shows the Liberty School located on property owned by Nathan Hartley. Nathan Hartley married Artemisia E. Duncan, a sister to Elzy C. Duncan, on April 5, 1853], cousin Jim's father held meeting in grove near school house. Amanda sat in buggy nearby talking to a boy but listened with one ear.
Mentor Graham, school, 3 months, 10 or 11 years of age. He was getting to be an old man [M. Graham was born 1800 in Greensburg, KY, he was the New Salem school teacher, and probably taught school at most schools in the county. He left Menard Co. after 1880, and died in Blunt, SD, in 1886]. Amanda's grandmother Miller was his age [probably speaking of Sarah Davis Miller]. Aunt Susan, grandmother's sister "plagued" her mother about Mentor Graham.
Grandmother Duncan's sister Aunt Catherine was courted by and married a Clary Grove boy. Jack Clary a descendant. [Sarah Davis Miller is listed on the 1850-1870 Menard Co. census. The 1850 census lists her children as: John 19, P.A. "Polly Ann" 18 (married Elzy Duncan in 1852), N.J. "Nancy Jane" 16 (married David Fletcher in 1857), Susan 14, William 12 (married Marie Mahala Hind in 1864), Milton 10 (married Adeline Bell in 1871), Catherine 6 (married John A. Clary in 1871, son of Royal A. and Eve Tibbs Clary).]
Uncle Nathan Hartley (lived) about one quarter mile through woods to "Big Road" east. ... Grandmother Miller lived about three quarter miles west little Branch close to house, through timber, unfenced road. Amanda walking home one day slipped, with fast beating heart very quietly around a sleeping drunkard.
Uncle John Irving or Irwin, Grandfather Duncan's sister's husband, lived about three quarters mile southeast on "Big Road." Grandmother Duncan lived one and a half miles southeast on "Big Road." [Marshall Duncan, born 1790 NC and wife Hannah lived in the Rock Creek Precinct in T17 R6 S19, they had at least 11 known children. Artemesia E. (m. Nathan Hartley), Susan T. (m. Claiborne Hall), Elzy C. (m. Polly Ann Miller), J.N., Parthena, Zanthur or Xanthius, Clinton (m. Philena), Eliza, and 3 male children. I have no information at this time on the parents or siblings of Marshall Duncan. The 1874 plat book shows several Irwin families living around the Marshall Duncan families.]
(MAD: caption of map at top of page: Pictured above is the 1874 platmap showing a portion of T17 R6 Rock Creek Precinct. Section 19 shows the estate of Marshall Duncan (note the orchard and cemetery markings), property of N. Hartley, and the property of the Irwin families. Also in Section 19, north of the M. Duncan estate is the Liberty School. The broken line at the bottom of the map is the Menard/Sangamon Co. line.)
Ketler's Mills north about 1 miles on "Big Road."
Went to Salem Mills to have corn and wheat ground. Amanda at 80 years of age "can hear the old Mill Dam roaring yet."
Brick schoolhouse northeast of grandmother Duncan, from back door, through large orchard, past cemetery, through timber to school. [There is a school shown in S21 that seems to follow these general directions, the #8 School, in the Gordon District.]
Way to school, out to "Big Road" south past Uncle John I. [Irwin] on east between Uncle John's and grandmother Duncan, half mile.
Aunt Nancy Fletcher, grandmother's sister lived at Pleasant Plains for awhile [daughter of Sarah Davis Miller, wife of David Fletcher, not listed on the 1850 Menard Co. census, but Nancy is listed without her husband on the 1870 and 1880 Menard Co. census]. Amanda and her folks stopped and ate dinner with them the time they came back from Iowa. Amanda remembers visiting them several times when they lived on farm near Pleasant Plains.
Uncle Jack Davis, grandmother Miller's brother lived in Salisbury. Large family, went back and forth quite often.
Grandfather Duncan's sons, the three Grandfather brought from Kentucky with him, lived in Salisbury, raised large families. [Need to check Sangamon County records.]
House -- first house born in, double log house, double fire place ... (MAD: description of house, furniture, etc., not copied here).
Jim Hartley, our Jim's Uncle boarded with Grandmother, first teacher Uncle Nathan taught several terms. Uncle Nathan married Grandfather Duncan's sister Parthena Duncan, called Aunt Art. His children went to school at same time. Schoolhouse had big cast iron stove with hearth.
