"VA Rev. War Land Grant Claims, 1783-1850, Rejected" by Hopkins (975.5 R2hw; SLC 9/10/93; have copy pages)
This book concerns the applications made for Bounty Land after the war and ... these applications by veterans or their heirs were denied on the basis that the veteran did not have the required amount of time in service or, in rare cases, that there were no records to prove that he had served at all. ... The earliest Bounty Warrants were issued during the course of the Revolution prior to the year 1783, and were still being granted as late as 1850. During this period of almost 70 years, the applications often name children and grandchildren of the veteran and tell where they are then living. A number of veterans lived to be in their 80s and 90s and, although they may be living as far West as MO by that time, they usually tell who enlisted them, where in VA this happened, the year and the unit.
Duncan, Nimrod, Soldier, Army. John Duncan and Joseph Duncan, sons of Nimrod Duncan an insane person of Shelby Co. KY, in Shelby Co. (no date) state that their father was a member of the IL Regiment. Major Bland W. Ballard, aged 83, in Shelby Co. KY, on 9 Dec. 1842 states that he was in the IL Regt. and knew Nimrod Duncan and his brother, Benjamin Duncan, in 1780. The brothers were serving under Lt. William Roberts and they served to the end of the war. (p.76)

Additional information: According to descendants, his brother Benjamin Duncan is the Benjamin Duncan who died in Madison Co. KY in 1796, and is referred to in "History of Pittsylvania Co. VA" by Maud C. Clement, pg.167: "Six of the Duncan Family appeared in Culpeper Co. (VA) in 1722. They were scotchmen and it is supposed that they came up from Dumfries, a Scotch settlement in Prince William Co. About 1750 James Duncan moved from Culpeper to Pittsylvania and established his home in the S.E. part of the County. Between 1762-1768, Benjamin, Charles, William, Thomas, John, Martin and Ambrose Duncan were patenting lands in different parts of the County. Benjamin made his home on Staunton River at the mouth of Blackwater. After the close of the Revolution he moved out to Madison Co. Ky. where his will was proved in 1796, naming sons Benjamin, Jr., John and Samuel." Madison Co. KY Will Book A, pg.134, dated 5 Nov. 1796, proved 6 Dec. 1796, will of Benjamin Duncan; names wife Elizabeth, son John Duncan, son Samuel Duncan, son Benjamin Duncan (1/2 land), son John the other half; dau. Smith Co. TN Chancery Court Minutes, Vol. 5, 1837-1842 (extract from Louis Boone 12/82; FHC film 319,184; SLC 9/10/93)
Book 5, pg.416 to 422: Allen vs. Duncan, et al; the bill of complaint of Wm. H. Allen, a creditor of Decalb Co. TN, vs. Susannah Duncan, widow and relict of John Duncan decd, Lylborn Chandler & wife Nancy (formerly Nancy Duncan) citizens of Smith Co. TN, George Gregston and his wife Catherine (formerly Catherine Duncan), Richard M. Duncan, Elizabeth Duncan, Joseph E. Duncan, Jesse A. Duncan, John L. Duncan, Winney Duncan, Sarah H. Duncan, Licetty Duncan, Cary R. Duncan, Sarah Moore, William R. Moore, citizens of Smith Co. TN, Martha Moore, John Moore, citizens of Sumner Co. TN; that sometime in 1839 John Duncan purchased land in Decalb Co. TN, from one Reuben Brown for $610 and paid $200 and gave notes for the balance, due said Brown on 1 Aug. 1849 (1841?), one for $110, the other for $300 payable to said Brown or Bird Billings?, the orator [Wm. Allen] became security for said Duncan for the payment of $400; Brown made a deed in fee simple for the land to John Duncan, who shortly afterwards took possession by remaining upon the land. Some time in October 1839 Duncan died intestate, leaving said Susannah his widow and Nancy who had married Lilbourn Chandler, Catherine who had married Geo. Gregston, Rich. M., Elizabeth, Joseph E., Jesse A., John L., Winney, Sarah H., Licetty, and Cary R. Duncan his children, and Sarah, Martha, John and William R. Moore, 4 grandchildren, the offspring of Mary Moore a deceased dau. of intestate, his heirs at law, in whom your orator is informed the title to the land vested upon the death of said John Duncan ... the land on the bank of the Cany Fork below the mouth of mine, ... creek, then up the river south east, crossing the creek, then ... north up the bluff with the fence, adj. ?Isham Davis?, containing 380 acres (too faint) John Duncan, and widow Susannah (was administrator). John Duncan has no other assets to pay the debt; request that the tract of land be made liable for payment of the balance of the purchase price; that the minors by their guardians ... that subpoenas be issued for them to answer the complaint; that a lien be attached to the land for payment of the balance. That ten of the defendants are minors within 21 years of age and have no guardian, viz, Jesse A., John L., Winney, Licetty, Sarah H., and Cary R. Duncan and also Martha and Sarah, John and William R. Moore, petition to court to appoint a guardian or guardian at litum. Answer filed Aug. 1840, by Susana Duncan, Lilborn Chandler, Nancy Chandler, George Gregston and Catharine, Richard M. Duncan, Elizabeth Duncan, Joseph E. Duncan, Licetty Duncan, Cary R. Duncan, Jesse A. Duncan, John L. Duncan, Winney Duncan, Sarah Duncan, Sarah Moore, William R. Moore, Martha A. Moore and John Moore; it is true that John Duncan purchased the land as charged and made the payment and executed his notes, which notes they also admit are due, and admit that the personal estate will not be sufficient to pay the debts; Susannah admits that she is the widow of said John Duncan, and the other defendants admit they are the chidren and heirs at law; wit. Hosea Stamp, Jeremiah Freeland?; that the admission will promote the interest of the minors to dispose of the land. Bond of William Allen, security Henry B. McDonald?, to Susanah Duncan, that William Allen will prosecute the suit, 4 Aug. 1840; Power of attorney 31 July 1840 by Wm. Allen to Henry B. McDonald? to sign his name on the suit. Decree by court, the case heard 10 Feb. 1841, that the Clerk & Master pay to complainant William H. Allen the amount of his debt ....
(MAD: there is no proof this John Duncan was the son of Charles & Keziah Duncan of Worcester Co. MD. However, TN General Land Grant BB-514, 15 Feb. 1826 to Thomas W. Duncan, son of Josiah Duncan, was for 200a in Smith Co. TN corner to land owned by John Allen and Geo. E. Dale. Josiah Duncan was a witness to Smith Co. TN Deed B-510, 12 March 1807, of Thomas Dale Jr. of Worcester Co. MD giving Adam Dale of Smith Co. TN power of attorney to convey Smith Co. TN land purchased from Daniel Allen. And Duncan (no first name) and John Allen were neighbors in Smith Co. TN Deed C-267, 29 June 1809, grant to William Estes. Moses Allen was one of the commissioners appointed to settle Josiah Duncan's estate with his administrator Samuel H. Duncan, in 1828-1830 Smith Co. TN Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions Minutes. Josiah and Thomas W. Duncan lived on Smith's Fork of Caney Fork in Smith Co. TN, as did at least some of the Allen family.)
