William B. Duncan, b. 1766 VA; of Caldwell, Calloway and Hickman Co. KY; d. ca June 1858 Hardeman Co. TN; mar. bef. 1804 to Winney Woolf from 96th Dist. SC, dau. of Henry Woolf from 96th Dist. SC who died in Marengo Co. AL in 1821.
1987 "Caldwell Co. KY History" by Samuel W. Steger (copy of pgs.
398-9 from Bennie Reeds;
William B. Duncan is her line)
Alfred Woolf was born in Caldwell Co. KY on
July 26, 1784, a son of Henry Woolf Jr. and Elizabeth Mitchell Woolf. Alfred
Woolf married Mary (Polly) Bond on June 26, 1811, and died on July 17, 1837,
nine days short of his 53rd birthday; they were the parents of ten children:
Madison, Crittenden, William Henry, Alfred Jr., Clara, Thomas Jefferson, Francis
Marion, Elizabeth Ann, Charity, and Dudley. Alfred's father [Henry Woolf Jr.]
and grandfather, Henry Woolf Sr., served during the Revolutionary War ... Henry
Woolf Sr. was born in PA ca 1724, married Polly Seaburn in 1745, and was killed
at Fort Washington on Nov. 16, 1776. Alfred Woolf was a brother of Fielding
Woolf. ... Sources: Military and tax records, letters. Submitted by John L.
Woolf, grandson of Robert Henry Woolf [son of William Henry, son of Alfred],
Huron, CA.
Fielding Woolf the pioneer Baptist preacher,
their eldest children, his parents Henry and Elizabeth Mitchell Woolf (b. 1746,
died 1821), and her parents John and Rachel Jennings, came from the 96th
District of SC in 1796 to the area what would become Caldwell Co. and patented
land located on the Sinks of the Muddy Fork of Little River. He was born about
1769 probably in Northampton Co. PA. His father Henry Jr. and grandfather Henry
Sr. both served in a company of troops from that county early in the Rev. War.
Henry Woolf Sr. was killed ... Nov. 16, 1766. Subsequently, Henry Jr. moved his
family to SC. .... Fielding Woolf is credited with organizing numerous Baptist
churches on this westernmost frontier (KY). .... His letters show ... On
November 9, 1831, Fielding and Docia sold their farm to Joseph McConnell and
moved to MO, where he died in Pettis Co.; his will was recorded Sept. 11, 1844.
Docia died there about 1834. She is identified as the daughter of John Jennings
in his will, which was recorded July 18, 1831, in Caldwell Co. Her brothers and
sisters as named in the will were Bailey, James, David, John Jennings Jr., Nancy
Grubbs, Miriam Griffith, Winifred Harrell, Sarah Davis, Polly Griffith,
Phoebe Bridges and Rebecca.
The
brothers and sisters of Fielding are shown in the settlement of the estate of
Henry Woolf in Caldwell Co. Henry died intestate in Marengo Co. AL in
1821. He and Elizabeth had apparently gone there in late 1811, but the farm in
Caldwell had not been sold. The heirs, March 1, 1827, were Fielding; Polly
Mayfield; Winney Duncan and husband William B. Duncan; Clary
Harmon and husband Samuel Harmon; Alfred Woolf; James Woolf; Betsy Freeman and
husband John P. Freeman; Henry Woolf; Redding Woolf heirs: Harrison, Perry,
Lucy, Emily, and Irvin Woolf; Brunetta Selman heirs: John, Orville, Betsy,
Alfred, Walker, and Polly Selman. Some of these individuals had moved to AL,
while others remained in Caldwell Co. ....

THE CORINTH HERALD'S - HON. W.L. DUNCAN.
Among the pioneer citizens of old Tishomingo Co. no one is entitled to
more consideration and appreciative remembrance than the Hon. William Lane
Duncan. .... William Lane Duncan was born in South Carolina in 1800.
His facilities for acquiring an education were limited, but he made the best of
such as were at hand. In the latter part of the '20's he, together with his
father, Thomas Lane Duncan, and two uncles, John F. and E.
Garner, emigrated to Russell's Valley, AL, and thence to Hardeman Co.
TN. Thomas Duncan, after the surrender of the lands to the government by
the Chickasaws, moved to Pontotoc Co. MS, and before his death acquired
an immense fortune. John F. Duncan moved to old Tishomingo Co. in
1834 and was elected a member of the first board of police of the Co. in the
spring of 1836, serving two years. He later moved to Pontotoc Co. where
he resided the remainder of his life. E. Garner Duncan Sr. moved to Tishomingo
Co. in 1848, but only remained a short time, returning to Hardeman Co.
TN, where he lived to the day of his death. Wm. L. Duncan was married to
Miss Rebecca Null, in Hardeman Co. TN on 7 November, 1830, and in 1842
moved to Tishomingo Co., where he lived the remainder of his life. ...
Mrs. Duncan died in 1852 and was buried in the Jacinto cemetery, and the same
year Mr. Duncan embarked in the mercantile business in Jacinto with a Mr.
Smith; .... At the close of the war Mr. Duncan was chosen to represent
Tishomingo county in the State convention, July, 1865, and also served a term in
the State Senate. He died on 11 August 1876, and was laid to rest in the City
cemetery, but was later disinterred and buried in Henry cemetery. (MAD:
believe the references to his two "uncles" should have been to his two
brothers, but have no proof.)
