Pg.533: DUNCAN, WILLIAM,
Brigadier-General, was born in that portion of York -- since set off and
called Adams -- county, PA, in the year 1771, and was one of a large
family of children. His father had been a soldier in the Revolutionary War, but
had died shortly afterwards. His early education was carefully attended to, and,
among other studies, he became a proficient in land surveying. When about
nineteen years of age, he was engaged by his brother-in-law, John
Nicholson, one of the projectors of the American Land Co., to survey some of his
lands lying near Pittsburgh. While en route for that destination, at that time
almost a frontier town, he joined, as a volunteer, a detachment of US troops,
under the command of Colonel Zebulon Pike, who were in search of hostile
Indians. This officer gave him his first lesson in military tactics; he also
made the acquaintance, and formed a friendship for his son, afterwards the brave
General Pike, who fell at Little York, Canada. On his return to Philadelphia,
... During the War of 1812, General Duncan was made Superintendent of US
Military Stores, at the Schuylkill Arsenal, and resided there. ... For many
years he represented the city of Philadelphia in the State Legislature. In 1829,
he was commissioned by President Jackson, Surveyor of Customs for the Port of
Philadelphia, and was re-appointed in 1833, thus serving, in that office, 8
years consecutively. Democrat; one of founders and trustees of Jefferson Medical
College; First Baptist Church. He was thrice married; first, in 1792, to Mary,
daughter of William Moulder, and who died in 1818. Two years after this
bereavement, he was united to her sister Sarah, who died in 1832. After
remaining a widower for nine years, he was married, in 1841, to the widow
(unnamed) of Rev. Dr. William Staughton, and daughter of James (the brother of
Charles Wilson) Peale, who yet survives him (1874). He died February 16th, 1864.

the Second District of Philadelphia. He identified himself with the Philadelphia
Militia, and during the early part of the War of 1812 was Superintendent of U.S.
Military Stores, being stationed at the Arsenal in the city. From October 4,
1811, until October, 1813, he served as Brigadier General of the Second Brigade,
First Division P.M., succeeding General Michael Leib and being succeeded by
General Thomas Snyder. He acted as Adjutant General of the PA Militia from

Information from Mrs. Dortha E. Welch of
Fortuna, MO, 1/26/1991, who is presently researching the family: A family story
is that in 1927 or 1928 a meeting was held in Macomb, IL, with the children of Robert
Duncan in attendance. There was a castle in ruins in Tyrone Co. IRE which
was to become the property of Robert. Some said there was an older
brother Benjamin, but most of the family believed that Robert was
the only child of a Robert Duncan and Mary Gillis. The elder Robert
fell heir to the castle because he married Mary Gillis. The children of the
younger Robert, including Robert's son Charles Edward (Dortha's
grandfather), were advised of back taxes and many other charges and none of them
were financially in a position to assume this burden. The group signed title
back to Armaugh, Tyrone Co. Northern IRE. She is searching for some record of
this document; there was a charge for family research attached to the whole
package; in Ireland at Armaugh they could not or would not search records nor
allow her to search.
Researchers of this family include Mrs.
Florence Kessler of Benton, KS (1994 address).

Pg.1192: DUNCAN, Elizabeth -- One of
the oldest, if not the oldest citizen, of Sangamon County, is Miss Elizabeth
Duncan, a native of Kentucky, who has now passed her hundredth birthday. Miss
Duncan was born August 8, 1811, and in 1829 emigrated from Bourbon
County, KY, riding on horseback most of the way. Other members of the party who
emigrated to Sangamon County at the same time were Ivins Foster, who settled in
what is now Curran Township; Montreville Dunn, who settled in Chatham Township,
and Mrs. Rebecca McKee, who located in Loami Township. Mrs. McKee had a family
of four sons - Samuel, John, James and William - and one daughter, Mrs. Martha
Duncan, who was a widow and mother of Elizabeth Duncan, the subject
of this sketch. Elizabeth - or "Aunt Betty," as she is
affectionately called by her most intimate friends, was never married, but for
some thirty years followed the vocation of a tailoress, making men's fine suits
with the skill of the experienced tailor. In her advanced years she retains her
mental and physical energies in a remarkable degree, and is accustomed to visit
the city of Springfield two or three times every year where she is cordially
welcomed by a number of ardent friends who remember her long life and who have
always held her in high esteem. Miss Duncan was present at the annual
meeting of the Old Settlers Society of Sangamon County, held at New Berlin,
August 2, 1911, and was awarded the prize as the oldest citizen in attendance.
