Eli Duncan, b.1798 Newberry Co. SC, wife Rebecca Stephenson, of Edgar Co. IL 1850; son of Amos Duncan (not Isaiah Duncan) of Newberry Co. SC, see Newsletter Vol.5 #1, 1997.
1887 "Portrait and Biographical Album of Coles Co. IL" by
Chapman Bros (FHC film 825,562; SLC 9/8/93)
Pg.221: DR. W.S. DUNCAN, of Hutton
Twp., spent his childhood and youth in Greene Co. IN, where he was born
Feb. 26, 1825; his grandfather having been Isaiah Duncan, an enterprising
Southern farmer who was born, reared and spent his entire life in SC (MAD: Newberry
Co. per Eli's 1850 census); he married and became the father of a
family, including five sons and two daughters. The sons were Isaiah, George,
John, Eli and Joshua. Of these, the father of our subject was next to
the youngest. He received a common school education and remained with his father
on the farm until reaching manhood. He then migrated North and, locating in Greene
Co. IN, was married to Miss Rebecca Stevens in the spring of 1822. Mrs. Duncan
was born Feb. 28, 1801, in KY, and was the dau. of William Stevens, who
emigrated from the Blue Grass regions to Harrison Co. IN. After marriage,
Mr. Duncan rented a tract of land and farmed until the spring of 1835; he
then came to Edgar Co., this State, secured possession of 40a of timber
land, part of which he cleared and occupied until spring of 1853; he then
removed with his family to Laclede Co. MO and died there in 1856, leaving
a family of seven children. While a resident of IN he and his wife had become
members of the Dunkard Church, but after coming to IL united with the Christian
Church. The mother survived her husband about 23 years, making her home with her
children, and died Dec. 10, 1881. The parental family included the following
children: Isaiah who died in infancy; W.S. of our sketch; John
who died in infancy; George now a minister of the Christian Church at AR;
Joshua; Marion who died when 20 years of age; Obadiah a resident
of Piatt Co. IL; Jane; Elizabeth a widow, now residing in Marion
Co., and Polly A. who has carried on a millinery establishment in Bement
[Piatt Co.], IL, for the last 20 years.
Dr.
Duncan was the 2nd child of his parents and received but a common-school
education; when 18, he commenced working in a tanyard for 3 years, then enlisted
in Co. H, 4th IL Vol. Inf., started on 16 June 1846 by wagon to Springfield, IL,
bound for Mexico; after reaching the seat of war, he found that the precarious
state of his health would prevent him from continuing in the ranks, and in Dec.
received his discharge on account of disability, the result of measels
contracted at Matamoras, Mex. Upon returning to Edgar Co., he began
teaching school, ... worked on farm, ... in about 1853 began practicing (as
doctor) in Coles Co. The marriage of Dr. Duncan and Miss Charlotte
W. Elsbury was celebrated at the home of the bride, Dec. 3, 1847; Mrs. Duncan
was born March 13, 1826, and is the dau. of John and Charlotte (Winters) Elsbury,
natives of IN. Dr. Duncan continued teaching for about 3 years after his
marriage, ... located at Strington, ... until 1860, that spring he took up
residence at Sidney, Champaign Co. In Jan. 1864 during progress of Civil
War, he enlisted in Co. I, 10th IL Vol. Cav., and was appointed Assistant
Surgeon, receiving his commission 18 March ... until Oct. 13 following, when he
resigned, returned to Sidney, continued practice until 1868. Health compelled
him to leave prairie country so he moved to Farmersburg [Sullivan Co.],
IN; until Aug. 1884, then returned to Sidney, then to Hutton Twp. in Oct. 1886,
where still lives. Mrs. Charlotte Duncan died at Farmersburg, IN, in Oct. 1874;
member of Christian Church; bore nine children, recorded as follows: Minerva

Aug. 15 following; her twin brother, William M., died Aug. 5 following. Nora,
born July 10, 1865, became the wife of Lester E. Foulke and is a resident of
Champaign Co.
The
present wife of our subject, whom he married Jan. 5, 1875, was formerly Miss
Elizabeth Johns, a native of Boone Co. IN, and born June 29, 1846; she is the
dau. of Hardin W. and Charlotte T. Johns, natives of KY; two children: William

others made the extreme southeast corner of the county their home. ... The
Howards settled in the southwest corner of township 4-5, in the year 1809, but
it is not certain whether they then knew anything of the existence of the Duncan
settlements, six miles south of them. ... Duncan ... died in 1852. His
wife was a Cuddy, aunt of George Cuddy, so well and favorably known by the
present generation of the township. The Duncans raised a family of five
children, four daughters and a son, Hugh M., who became the father of a
large family, and was looked upon as one of the best and most respected men of

He whose name heads this sketch was for years one of the most highly respected
citizens and successful farmers of Callaway county, and although he has been
dead for nearly twenty years, his memory is still ... He was born in Bourbon
Co. KY, on the 9th of April, 1807, and was reared on his father's farm in that
county. In 1830 he was married to Miss Sallie J., a daughter of William and Anna
Adair of that county. She was born there January 23, 1811. Two years after his
marriage Mr. Duncan removed to Missouri and settled near Millersburg, in
Callaway county, where he lived for nearly thirty-five years and until his
death, which occurred on the 14th of February, 1866. On coming to this county he
bought a small tract of land, 120 acres in section 1, of Bourbon township, on
which he improved a farm. ... until at the time of his death he owned about
1,000 acres .... He was twice married. His first wife died September 5, 1846,
leaving six children: Evalina, now the wife of James M. Bruner; George
T., Angelina, now the wife of Isaac F. Coons; Anna A., now the wife

was married June 20, 1847. She bore him eight children, of whom seven are
living: John, Hiram, Sallie J., Solomon K., Nimrod N., Richard and Nannje

large and worthy family ....
George T. Duncan his eldest son and
at whose instance this biographic sketch of his father is prepared, was born of
his father's first marriage in Bourbon township, Callaway Co. MO, October 9,
1835. After he grew up in this county he was married here on the 22d of

Callaway county. Mr. and Mrs. Duncan have reared only two
children: Dempie, now the wife of Joel T. Hayden, of Boone Co. MO,
and Anna Lee, the wife of James C. Reid of the same county. ....

Historical Society (SLC book 973 D36e; SLC 9/18/93; index on film 1,425,550)
Vol.25, 1926, p.137: (The Scott Line). ...
John Scott, born about 1646-50 (perhaps in America), probably died in Roxbury,
MA, between 1715 and 1722. John Scott was admitted to the covenant of Roxbury
Church, May 5, 1677. He served in King Philip's War in 1675-1676. He served on
the "Jury of Tryalls" in1695; constable in Roxbury, April 11, 1705,
and surveyor of highways the fourth of the following March. John Scott married,
in Roxbury [Suffolk Co.], May 29, 1672, Hannah Duncan, daughter of
Samuel and Mary Duncan. Children, born in Roxbury, MA: 1. Hannah,
born July 24, 1674, died Aug. 7, 1674. 2. John, born Nov. 11,1675, died in about

p.139: (The Duncan Line) Arms -
Gules, a chevron or, between two cinquefoils in chief, and a hunting horn in
base argent, garnished azure. Crest - a ship under sail. Motto - Disce Pati. The
Scottish family name Duncan is from the personal name Duncan, the
Lowland representative of the Gaelic Donnchadh, probably from the founder of the
clan Robertson, who lived about 1630; whence the sub clan Duncan. Of the
ten coats-of-arms recorded by Burke for Duncan, six show as principal
charges a chevron between two cinquefoils. The coat-of-arms blazoned herewith is
recorded for Duncan of Seaside, later Lundie, Scotland.
(I) Samuel
Duncan (Dunkin), of England, was in Newbury, Massachusetts, in 1638. He
removed to Boston [Suffolk Co.] about 1650, but Boston has no vital
record of his family after 1656. He appears in the land records of Muddy River,
now Brookline, in 1672. His wife's name is believed to have been Mary. Children
(probable and partial list): 1. Samuel, died Nov. 19, 1693, at Roxbury;
married Deliverance, surname unknown. 2. John, granted land in Billerica,
1670; married, in 1675, Joanna Jefts. 3. Hannah, of whom further. 4. Jabesh,
born in Boston, February 24, 1654; served in King Philip's War, April, 1676. 5. Thomas,
born in Boston, January 15, 1656.
(II) Hannah
Duncan (Dunkin), daughter of Samuel and Mary Duncan, was born
in Boston, April 28, 1651, and died in Roxbury, Massachusetts, before 1712. She
married, at Roxbury, May 29, 1672, John Scott. (see Scott line above)
(The Prior Line) ... Hannah Prior, daughter
of James and Susanna Prior, was born in Boston, Massachusetts, Sept. 1, 1687.
She married in Roxbury, Massachusetts, May 17, 1708, Joseph Scott, son of John
and Hannah (Duncan) Scott.
