Pg.221: DR. W.S. DUNCAN, of Hutton Twp., spent his childhood and youth in Greene Co. IN, where he was born Feb. 26, 1825; his grandfather having been Isaiah Duncan, an enterprising Southern farmer who was born, reared and spent his entire life in SC (MAD: Newberry Co. per Eli's 1850 census); he married and became the father of a family, including five sons and two daughters. The sons were Isaiah, George, John, Eli and Joshua. Of these, the father of our subject was next to the youngest. He received a common school education and remained with his father on the farm until reaching manhood. He then migrated North and, locating in Greene Co. Mrs. Duncan was born Feb. 28, 1801, in KY, and was the dau. of William Stevens, who emigrated from the Blue Grass regions to Harrison Co. IN. After marriage, Mr. Duncan rented a tract of land and farmed until the spring of 1835; he then came to Edgar Co., this State, secured possession of 40a of timber land, part of which he cleared and occupied until spring of 1853; he then removed with his family to Laclede Co. Upon returning to Edgar Co., he began teaching school, ... worked on farm, ... in about 1853 began practicing (as doctor) in Coles Co. The marriage of Dr. Duncan and Miss Charlotte W. Elsbury was celebrated at the home of the bride, Dec. 3, 1847; Mrs. Duncan was born March 13, 1826, and is the dau. of John and Charlotte (Winters) Elsbury, natives of IN. Joseph Duncan, b.1783 NC, mar. Amy Vineyard or Winegarten 1804 Barren Co. KY, lived Madison Co. IL 1820-1850; had son Hugh McCracken Duncan.

1882 "History of Madison Co. IL" by W.R. Brink & Co. (SLC book 977.386 H2m and FHC film 908,676)
Pg.426-8: Helvetia: The first arrival of white settlers may have been in 1804, when Joseph Duncan with a few others made the extreme southeast corner of the county their home. ... The Howards settled in the southwest corner of township 4-5, in the year 1809, but it is not certain whether they then knew anything of the existence of the Duncan settlements, six miles south of them. ... Duncan ... died in 1852. His wife was a Cuddy, aunt of George Cuddy, so well and favorably known by the present generation of the township. The Duncans raised a family of five children, four daughters and a son, Hugh M., who became the father of a large family, and was looked upon as one of the best and most respected men of his time. He lost his life by accident; being thrown out of his carriage while on his way to attend a funeral. The daughters, none of whom survive, were: Linnie, who married John S. Carrigan; Sarah, Alexander Forrester; Rebecca, B.C. Plant, and Mary, married James A. Berry. ....
Additional information: Joseph Dunkin married Amy Vineyard on 8 Nov. 1804 in Barren Co. KY ("Marriage Records of Barren Co. KY 1799-1817" by Elizabeth Prather Ellsberry). Lee Cuddy married Elizabeth Winegarten on 11 June 1813 in Williamson Co. TN, bondsman John Winegarten (bond only in file; from Catherine H. Strider). It is claimed that the first settlers came from KY and NC in 1804 locating in the southeast corner of the township, among them Joseph Duncan with his wife and first child (born during their trip to Illinois) (pg.525); the first white child born in Helvetia Township was H.M. Duncan, Dec. 16, 1816. (pg.526, 1912 "Centennial History of Madison Co. IL and Its People 1812 to 1912" by W.T. Norton)
Joseph Duncan was in Madison Co. IL from 1820 to 1840; 1850 Madison Co. IL Census, Marine Settlement, pg.567, #153, Joseph Duncan 67 NC, High M. (m) 32, Mary P. 19, Joseph F. 8, William M. 1 IL. Madison Co. IL marriages list Hugh M. Duncan to Nancy J. Berry on 4 March 1841, to Martha R. Good on 27 April 1845, and to Mary Jane Savage on 16 March 1848 ("Madison Co. IL Marriage Record Index, 1813-1850" Vol.1, by Shelley).
This family is being researched by Mrs. Catherine H. Strider, La Mesa, CA, in 1984 and later, a descendant of Hugh McCracken Duncan and wife Mary Savage.

Circuit Court suit (776) Bourbon county, Ky., and deeds (Bk. X, p. 149, Bk. Hutchison her interest in tract of 102-1/2 acres as widow of Elias Rymel. From these records it is evident Catherine was a second wife of Thomas Duncan and not the mother of his older children.

Pg.561-563: JOHN DUNCAN (deceased). He whose name heads this sketch was for years one of the most highly respected citizens and successful farmers of Callaway county, and although he has been dead for nearly twenty years, his memory is still ... He was born in Bourbon Co. KY, on the 9th of April, 1807, and was reared on his father's farm in that county. In 1830 he was married to Miss Sallie J., a daughter of William and Anna Adair of that county. She was born there January 23, 1811. Two years after his marriage Mr. Duncan removed to Missouri and settled near Millersburg, in Callaway county, where he lived for nearly thirty-five years and until his death, which occurred on the 14th of February, 1866. On coming to this county he bought a small tract of land, 120 acres in section 1, of Bourbon township, on which he improved a farm. ... until at the time of his death he owned about 1,000 acres .... He was twice married. His first wife died September 5, 1846, leaving six children: Evalina, now the wife of James M. Bruner; George T., Angelina, now the wife of Isaac F. Coons; Anna A., now the wife of Joseph W. Coons; Joseph W., and Mary E., now the wife of Wayman C. Sheets. Thus this noble old pioneer settler left a large and worthy family ....
George T. Duncan his eldest son and at whose instance this biographic sketch of his father is prepared, was born of his father's first marriage in Bourbon township, Callaway Co. MO, October 9, 1835. After he grew up in this county he was married here on the 22d of September, 1856, to Miss Louisa F., daughter of John and Elizabeth West, of Callaway county. Mr. and Mrs. Duncan have reared only two children: Dempie, now the wife of Joel T. Hayden, of Boone Co. MO, and Anna Lee, the wife of James C. Reid of the same county. ....

p.139: (The Duncan Line) Arms - Gules, a chevron or, between two cinquefoils in chief, and a hunting horn in base argent, garnished azure. Crest - a ship under sail. Motto - Disce Pati. The Scottish family name Duncan is from the personal name Duncan, the Lowland representative of the Gaelic Donnchadh, probably from the founder of the clan Robertson, who lived about 1630; whence the sub clan Duncan. Of the ten coats-of-arms recorded by Burke for Duncan, six show as principal charges a chevron between two cinquefoils. The coat-of-arms blazoned herewith is recorded for Duncan of Seaside, later Lundie, Scotland.
