Nathaniel? Duncan, m. ca 1822 to Mary Nelms, 1840 Elbert Co. GA, 1860 Newton Co. GA; son Jesse Asberry Duncan b. 1830 GA, d. 1900 Cass Co. TX, m. 1855 Caroline Kirkpatrick in Newton Co. GA.
Typed copy of letter 12/22/1990 from J. Kirk Duncan to his cousin Wanda L.
Vice; from Mrs. Wanda Lear Vice, Brownville, TX,
4/20/1997:
This undated letter was in the possession of
Uncle Wade Duncan. The presumption is that it was written by a Mary Duncan
to a son and daughter-in-law. Another presumption is that Wade gained possession
of the letter from an ancestor. If the presumptions are correct, the conclusion
is that it was written by Wade's Great Grand Mother Mary Duncan to his
Grand Father J.A. Duncan and Grand Mother Caroline Kirkpatrick (Granny).
Mary, then, would be the Miss Nelholmes, whose first name Wade's Father J.N.
Duncan was unable to remember. The names and birth days would be her
childrens'. J.A.'s date of birth is five years earlier than indicated in
other family records. The date of writing would be between the dates of the
birth of Mary's last child in 1844 and the death of J.A. in 1900.
Family records indicate that Uncle Wade's
great grand father was Nathan (Nat) Duncan, who was born in Henry
County, Georgia. Wade's Grand Father J.A. (Jessie Asbury) and
Grand Mother Caroline Kirkpatrick were, also, born in Henry County, Georgia.
At the time this letter was written, Mary
Duncan may have resided at Watkinsville, Oconee County, Georgia.
Near the left bottom of the letter are
puzzling letters which appear to be "bd." To the right of
"Watkinsville" are letters which appear to be "po." The
"po" could mean "post office." The "bd" doesn't
suggest a meaning.
The writing suggests a turkey quill and ink
and elementary education. To the best of my knowledge it reads:

Lucinda Duncan, 1793-1863, died while
crossing the plains by wagon train; marker placed by Ben Cannon & Family,

Ornate Iron protects grave in old cemetery
near Beowawe.
"Lucinda Duncan" Cross was
erected by railroad workers.
Ginger Barrett looks at grave in cemetery
where Lucinda Duncan lies.
The wagon trains crossed river here because
it has gravel bottom
Text by Chuck Barrett, Bugle publisher:
Probably the most famous grave in all of
Nevada sits on a low hill overlooking the Humboldt River just east of Beowawe
... The grave was discovered by rail crews when they were laying track for the
Central Pacific in the winter of 1868-69 as part of the great Transcontinental
Railroad. The grave was near the right of way and marked with a weathered board
bearing only the name "Lucinda Duncan." The crews took an
interest in the grave ...
So who was Lucinda Duncan? The
Pacific Tourist, "An illustrated guide to the Pacific Railroad to
California," published in 1884, relates: "On a low point of land that
juts out toward the river on the south side of the track, and just below
(Gravelly Ford), is the Maiden's Grave. Tradition has it that she was one of a
party of emigrants from Missouri, and that, at this ford, while they were in
camp, she sickened and died. Her loving friends laid her away to rest in a grave
on this point of land ..." Most of the stories told about Lucinda Duncan
placed her age at somewhere between 13 and 16 years of age apparently based on
nothing but the romantic imaginations of lonely railhands.
The true story may well be found in what
James Pressly Yager wrote in his diary in 1863: "An event occurred last
night that has cast a gloom over our camp; the death of one of its members. An
old lady, the mother and grandmother of a large part of our train ... she was
pious and beloved by the whole train, relatives and strangers. Her relatives
took her death very hard ... Before leaving camp, Mrs. Duncan's funeral
was preached by Capt. Peterson. Her remains were carried to its last resting
place as we proceeded on our journey and up on a high point to our left about
one mile from camp, we paid our last debt and respect to the remains of the
departed mother ... A board with the name of the deceased was put up at the head
and boulders were laid over the grave to keep wolves from scratching in
it."
And according to Iva Rader, "Lucinda
Duncan was my grandmother. I have known the story of her death all my life.
I heard it from my mother, Melinda Duncan Thompson Robertson and from my
half sisters. All who told it to me were on the wagon train with Lucinda
coming west to California in the spring of 1863 ... Lucinda Duncan was
not a girl of 17 or 18. She was a grandmother of 70 and she died near the
Humboldt River with her children and grandchildren about her. ..."
In 1905 the railroad replaced the small
marker with a large white cross that could be easily seen from passing trains.
If you wish to visit the Maiden's Grave, simply drive to Beowawe (I-80 to Exit
261, then south on SR 306 to Beowawe). Just a little after crossing the railroad
tracks, watch to the right side of the road for the school with its fenced
playground. Just opposite the school is an unmarked gravel road. Turn left onto
the road and drive east about two miles. You will see the large white cross on
the small rise to your right well before you get there.
