Notes for MARTIN C. DUNCAN:
"Genealogies of
KY Families From 'The Register of the KY Historical Society" Vol. A-M; Vol
O-Y, by Gen. Pub Co., 1981---"A few years ago, Miss Neva Williams, a
member of the staff of the "Harrodsburg Harold," found occasion to
gather some data on Mary Ray Duncan, largely from the lips of one of her
descendants. In quoting from her manuscript we learn that "....Early in
1800...there came to Harrodsburg from Maryland a young man---Martin Duncan.
From early fragments of his history one gleans that he must have had learning
above the average fro those days ....being the possessor of books----that seems
to have set people apart in those early days." They were married and lived on the land
deeded to Mary by the General (James Ray), a farm located on the State road
known as the Frankfort-Louisville pike.
The house, still standing when Miss Williams wrote her article, was
known in later days as the 'Harvey Woods place.'

LDS file of Martin
Duncan and Mary Ray listed the following children: Asa 1800, Daniel 1801, John
Ray 1801 (married Eliza Graham), Daniel 1802, Martin Jr. 1803, James 1804,
Madden 1806, Green 1806, Talbott 1808, Elizabeth 1808 (married Henry Britton),
Mary Ray Duncan 1809 (married unknown Burton born in 1805). The children I have listed came from KY
Mercer Co., KY deed of sale of slaves in which Mary Ray-Duncan was selling her
inheritance which required to signatures of her children as well. The only child I do not have listed was the
mother of a granddaughter listed who was married by that time. The birth of the LDS children are too early
for the date of marriage for Martin C. and Mary Polly. There are some similarities between the names
in the deed and the LDS: Abram could be
Asa, Champness M. could be Madden, Matthew T. could be Talbott, John R. could
be John Ray, I think the Daniel was a duplicate, so that leaves the unknown LDS
children as James, Elizabeth, Mary Ray and Green. The interesting part of the name Green is
that Daniel C. Duncan, son of Martin C., named one of his children Green.
