Downloading Research Files

Your computer must have Windows 95 or higher to access the research files. The files are written in WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS format, but can be read by Microsoft Word for Windows or WordPerfect for Windows if you have installed the file "converters" from your original Word or Works or WordPerfect Installation CD-ROM.

The research files on http://www.dsa.duncanroots.com/files.htm are in compressed folders that have been zipped (by ZipMagic) and password protected. After you have downloaded a compressed folder (called an Archive by ZipMagic) and clicked on the folder (archive) name, the compressed folder (archive) will open and the original files will self-extract into default directories (folders) on your hard drive when the correct password is entered.

For example, the folder (archive) FLCOURT.exe will self-extract into the directory (folder) C:\DSA\FL\COURT on your computer. This directory will be created by the extraction program. If you wish to use a different, existing directory (folder), the program provides an opportunity to do so.

If you have anti-virus software installed it may try to prevent your downloading or opening a folder with the .exe extension. If this happens you may have to temporarily disable the anti-virus software. The research files have already been scanned for viruses.

Detailed Steps for downloading and opening the folders

  1. On the webpage on http://www.dsa.duncanroots.com/files.htm double click on the desired folder; choose SAVE, and the folder will download to your Desktop.
  2. When the download is complete, close the download box, close your web browser and go to your Desktop.
  3. On your Desktop, double click on the newly downloaded compressed folder. You will get a box entitled Extract Archive File. Click on NEXT.
  4. Choose the directory (folder) where you want the research files to be placed, and if it's a new directory, click YES.
  5. You will then be asked for the password. Type it in and click NEXT. The compressed file you downloaded will then be opened and the extracted research files will be placed in the designated directory. Make a note of which directory this is.
  6. Now open your word processing program and use it to navigate to the desired directory, and for FILES OF TYPE, select All Files (*.*). Then Double click on the folder and then on one of the files inside. Your word processing program will then open it.
  7. After the research files have extracted from the compressed folder you will not need the compressed folder again so you can delete it.
